[Guizhi Gancao Dazao Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, and Jujube Decoction)]
Herbs: Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Melle (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草, four liang), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi, 桂枝, stir-fried), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang, 生姜, three liang each), Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di Huang, 生地黄, one jin), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen, 人参), Asini Corii Colla (Ejiao, 阿胶, two liang each), Oryzae Fructus Impolitus (Mahu Ren, 麻子仁).
In Shaoyang disease presenting with knotted and intermittent pulse (Jie Dai Mai, 结代脉) and palpitations (Xin Dong Ji, 心动悸), this formula is indicated.
"Knotted" (Jie, 结) and "intermittent" (Dai, 代) both refer to pulses with pauses. These arise from the deficiency and decline of Qi and Blood, where the True Qi cannot continue sequentially, thus producing such a pulse. "Palpitations" refers to the heart beating restlessly without peace, also caused by internal deficiency of True Qi. Tonifying deficiency removes weakness; therefore, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen, 人参), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Melle (Zhi Gancao, 炙甘草), and Zizyphi Fructus (Da Zao, 大枣) are used. Warming generates Yang; therefore, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang, 生姜) and Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi, 桂枝) are used. Moisturizing nourishes Yin; therefore, Asini Corii Colla (Ejiao, 阿胶) and Oryzae Fructus Impolitus (Mahu Ren, 麻子仁) are used. Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄) and Ophiopogonis Tuber (Mai Dong, 麦冬) serve to clear the Heart and calm palpitations.
[Fuling Gancao Tang (Poria, Licorice, and Ginger Decoction)]
Herbs: Poria (Fu Ling, 茯苓, peeled), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi, 桂枝, stir-fried, one liang each), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang, 生姜, three liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 甘草, one liang).
In Shaoyang disease where Water Qi invades the Heart causing palpitations (Xin Dong Ji, 心动悸), this formula is indicated.
When Water Qi invades the Heart causing palpitations, it is because Water is feared by Heart Fire; thus, when invaded, it causes agitation and palpitation. This results from excessive drinking of water. Bland flavors can leach out water; therefore, Poria (Fu Ling, 茯苓) is used. Acrid flavors can disperse fluid retention; therefore, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang, 生姜) and Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi, 桂枝) are used. Benefiting Earth controls Water; therefore, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 甘草) is used. It is said: Palpitations caused by fluid retention are more severe than those caused by other pathogens. Even if there are other excess pathogens, the palpitations must be treated first. Because water stagnates below the Heart, if not treated early, it will soak into the Lungs causing asthma and cough, transmit to the Stomach causing hiccups and dysphagia, overflow into the skin causing edema, or soak into the intestines causing diarrhea. The Classics state: "When there is cold extremities and palpitations below the Heart, treat the water first, then treat the cold extremities." Cold extremities indicate deep pathogenic invasion; if water is treated first in such cases, it is evident that for shallower diseases, water treatment is even more prioritized.
[Fuling Guizhi Gancao Dazao Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, and Jujube Decoction)]
Herbs: Poria (Fu Ling, 茯苓, half jin, peeled), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi, 桂枝, four liang, stir-fried), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 甘草, two liang), Zizyphi Fructus (Da Zao, 大枣, fifteen pieces).
Decoction method: Boil with Ganlan Shui (Gentle Wave Water).
After sweating in Shaoyang disease, if palpitations occur below the umbilicus, indicating impending Ben Tun (Running Piglet) disease, this formula is indicated.
After sweating, Heart Fluid becomes deficient. The Kidney is the Water Organ; it desires to exploit the deficiency of Heart Fire to overcome it, hence palpitations below the umbilicus occur. Commonly called Ben Tun (Running Piglet, 奔豚), its Qi rushes upward to overwhelm the Heart. Poria (Fu Ling, 茯苓) is sweet and bland, benefiting Earth and attacking Kidney pathogens; Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi, 桂枝) is acrid and hot, benefiting Fire and pacifying Kidney Qi; the sweetness of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 甘草) and Zizyphi Fructus (Da Zao, 大枣) benefits the Spleen. Benefiting the Spleen controls the Kidney. Boiling with Ganlan Shui (Gentle Wave Water, 甘澜水), which has been agitated until powerless, is done to avoid assisting Kidney Qi.
