Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts each).
This formula is indicated for cases presenting with macules/rashes and sore throat.
Sheng Ma can dissipate macules; Gan Cao and Xuan Shen can clear the throat. The use of Sheng Ma to dissipate macules relies on its acrid-warm nature, meaning that acridity promotes dispersion and warmth prevents stagnation. The use of Gan Cao and Xuan Shen to clear the throat relies on their sweet and bitter flavors, meaning that sweetness can moderate and bitterness can descend.
Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus) (6 qian), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) (2 qian), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian).
This formula is indicated for skin eruptions of macules and rashes without interior syndromes.
Acrid and sweet substances act dispersively and belong to Yang; therefore, Fang Feng and Gan Cao are used. Regarding the pathology of macules, treating them with hot medicines causes blood extravasation and exacerbates the condition, while treating them with cold medicines causes blood coagulation and hinders dispersion; thus, acrid-cool medicines are most suitable, so Niu Bang Zi and Jing Jie are employed. Although it does not contain Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), it is named "Xi Jiao" because its efficacy is equivalent to that of Xi Jiao.
Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
This formula is indicated whether measles have erupted or not.
For various rashes that have not yet erupted, Sheng Ma and Ge Gen facilitate their emergence; for those that have already erupted, Sheng Ma and Ge Gen help dissipate them; Shao Yao harmonizes Ying (Nutritive Qi), and Gan Cao harmonizes Wei (Defensive Qi).
Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (stir-fried with ginger juice), Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba), Chan Tui (Cicadae Periostracum), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), Fu Ling (Poria), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix).
This formula is indicated for wind-heat Dan zhen (erysipelas-like rashes).
Wind-heat leads to exterior excess; excess conditions should be dispersed, so Jing Jie, Xiong Qiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fang Feng, and Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), all being acrid-dispersive agents, are used. Exterior excess implies interior deficiency; deficiency conditions should be tonified, so Ren Shen, Gan Cao, and Fu Ling, all being sweet-tonifying agents, are used. Excessive wind causes Qi obstruction; Hou Po descends Qi, while Chen Pi and Huo Xiang vent Qi. Wind-heat generates phlegm, treatment... [text cuts off here]
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
This formula is indicated for macules caused by Stomach heat accompanied by a deficient pulse.
Stomach heat manifests as dry mouth, restlessness, and thirst. The Stomach governs the muscles; thus, Stomach heat causes maceration of the muscular layer manifesting as macules. A deficient pulse indicates that vigorous fire consumes Qi, leaving the pulse unable to fill adequately. Due to Stomach heat, Shi Gao's cold nature is used; due to the deficient pulse, Ren Shen's tonifying property is used; Zhi Mu nourishes Ying (Nutritive Qi), and Gan Cao supports Wei (Defensive Qi).
This formula is essentially Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction).
