Seven seeds of *Cucumis melo* var. *makuwa* (ground into powder), taken with a decoction of soybean (*Glycine max*), adjusted to five fen.
For any disease characterized by Qi obstruction and blockage, this formula induces vomiting three times.
Bitter flavor promotes surging and draining; therefore, *Cucumis melo* var. *makuwa* is used to induce vomiting; sweet flavor harmonizes the Stomach; therefore, soybean is used to moderate it.
White Ginkgo Seeds (*Ginkgo biloba*, 21 pieces, stir-fried until yellow) Huangqin (*Scutellariae Radix*, stir-fried) Xingren (*Prunus armeniaca*, peeled and tips removed, each 1.5 qian) Sangbaipi (*Mori Cortex*, 5 qian, honey-fried) Su Zi (*Perillae Fructus*, 2 qian) Gancao (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*, 1 qian) Mahuang (*Ephedrae Herba*, nodes removed) Banxia (*Pinelliae Tuber*, processed by legal method) Kuandonghua (*Farfarae Flos*, each 3 qian).
This formula is indicated for asthma caused by Lung deficiency combined with cold invasion, rebellious Qi, and heat in the diaphragm.
Rough breathing sounds indicate "Xiao" (wheezing), which is a disease of excess due to external pathogens, suitable for exterior-releasing medicines. Shortness of breath indicates "Chuan" (panting), which is a syndrome of insufficiency due to Lung deficiency, suitable for interior-treating medicines.
Cold binding the exterior prevents Yang Qi from venting and dispersing, causing it to rebel upward; Qi converges at the diaphragm. The diaphragm belongs to Yang within Yang, thus generating heat. In this formula, Mahuang, Xingren, and Gancao are pungent and sweet substances that disperse outward, capable of releasing the exterior and settling Xiao; White Ginkgo Seeds, Kuandonghua, and Sangbaipi are substances that clear Metal and protect the Lung, capable of stabilizing the interior and settling Chuan; Su Zi descends Qi, Banxia scatters rebellion, and Huangqin clears heat.
Wuweizi (*Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus*, half liang, stir-fried) Renshen (*Ginseng Radix*, rhizome removed) Maimendong (*Ophiopogonis Radix*, heart removed) Xingren (*Prunus armeniaca*, peeled and tips removed) Chenpi (*Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*, white pith removed) Shengjiang (*Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens*, each 2 qian).
This formula is indicated for panting due to Lung deficiency accompanied by a large pulse.
Panting consumes Qi; Wuweizi is used to astringe it; deficiency causes panting and urgency; Renshen is used to tonify it; the Lung prefers moisture; therefore, Maimendong and Xingren are used; Qi prefers free flow; therefore, Chenpi and Shengjiang are used.
Renshen (*Ginseng Radix*) Gancao (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*, honey-fried) Fuzi (*Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*, processed) Ganjiang (*Zingiberis Rhizoma*, stir-fried) Baizhu (*Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*, stir-fried, each 1 qian).
This formula is indicated for frequent and urgent panting and coughing upon slight movement, with a slow and fine pulse, caused by Spleen and Lung deficiency-cold and phlegm-saliva congestion.
This syndrome is deficiency, and the pulse indicates cold. Deficiency requires tonification; Renshen, Baizhu, and Gancao are used to tonify deficiency; Cold requires warming; Ganjiang and Fuzi are used to warm cold.
