For generalized edema of the whole body, panting with rapid breathing, irritability and thirst, and difficulty in urination and defecation, this formula is indicated.
Generalized edema indicates that the exterior skin and muscles are all affected; panting with rapid breathing, irritability and thirst, and difficulty in urination and defecation indicate that the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) internally is all affected. In this formula, Qianghuo and Qinjiao are herbs that release the exterior. Water evil (pathogenic water-dampness) residing in the exterior is discharged through sweat when treated with them. Zexie, Mutong, Dafupi, and Fulingpi are herbs that promote diuresis and leach out dampness. Water evil residing in the interior is discharged through urine when treated with them. Shanglu and Binglang are herbs that purge water retention. When water evil is obstructed and blocked, it is discharged through the bowels when treated with them. Chixiaodou and Jiaomu are substances that dry dampness. When water qi (water-related pathogenic factors) is steaming and humid, they are exhausted by these substances.
By dispersing the pathogenic influence wherever it resides, how could the disease fail to recede and disappear?

For internal invasion of damp-heat causing abdominal distension, difficulty in urination, and loose stools or fecal incontinence, this formula is indicated.
Internal invasion of damp-heat causes abdominal distension; difficulty in urination leads to loose stools. Chenpi, Muxiang, and Binglang are Qi-moving herbs; when Qi moves, dampness moves. Shihuo and Gancao constitute Liuyisan (Six-to-One Powder from the Summer Heat category); they are used here to treat damp-heat. Fuling, Zhuling, Zexie, Baizhu, and Rougui injure...

For water qi causing limb edema, absence of thirst, unconstipated bowels, and non-obstructed urination, which characterizes Yin Edema (Yin Shui), this formula is indicated.
Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold fails to control water, causing water to flow recklessly, thus resulting in limb edema. Due to the absence of stagnant heat, there is no thirst, and both urination and defecation are smooth. In this formula, the sweet-warm properties of Baizhu, Fuling, and Gancao are used to tonify deficiency; the acrid-hot properties of Ganjiang and Fuzi are used to warm cold; the acrid-warm properties of Muxiang and Caoguo are used to move stagnation; the Qi-descending action of Houpo and Dafuzi is used to attack pathogens; and the sour-warm property of Mugua is used to suppress what it overcomes (Liver Wood overcoming Spleen Earth). Named "Shipi San" (Solidify the Spleen Powder), its meaning is to solidify Earth (Spleen) to prevent water flooding. Although not all ingredients directly solidify Earth, removing pathogens is precisely how the Spleen Qi is...
