Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao, 白芍药) (stir-fried), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) (washed with wine, each 1 qian), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Talcum (Huashi, 滑石), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Akebiae Caulis (Mutong, 木通) (each 8 fen), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 荆芥), Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi, 车前子), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子) (stir-fried until black), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi, 牛蒡子) (slightly stir-fried, each 5 fen), Cicadae Periostracum (Chantui, 蝉蜕), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (each 3 fen).
For cases of residual heat accumulation after the eruption of smallpox/variolous diseases, this formula is indicated.
After the scabs of the eruption become dry and black, if the accumulated heat is not cleared, it generates toxic pathogens. In this formula, Fangfeng, Chaihu, and Chantui resolve heat at the exterior; when there is heat in the exterior, it naturally dissipates through the pores of the skin and hair. Jingjie and Niubangzi resolve heat in the upper jiao; when there is heat in the head, eyes, and throat, it discharges from the mouth and nose. Huashi, Mutong, Zhizi, and Cheqianzi resolve heat in the interior; when there is heat in the interior, it is guided to discharge via urination. Lianqiao removes guest-heat from various meridians, and Huangqin removes wandering fire from various meridians.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao, 赤芍药), Manis Squama (Chuanshanjia, 穿山甲), Boswelliae Resina (Ruxiang, 乳香), Myrrhae Resina (Moyao, 没药), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母), Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Jinyinhua, 金银花), Gleditsiae Spina (Zaocis Spina/Zaojiaoci, 皂角刺), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen, 天花粉).
For swelling and toxicity occurring after the eruption, this formula is indicated.
If excess patterns are treated with tonification, carbuncles and sores may arise. In this formula, Fangfeng and Baizhi release the exterior and drain heat; Ruxiang and Moyao invigorate blood and eliminate toxicity; Chuanshanjia and Zaojiaoci can guide other herbs to the site of toxicity; Jinyinhua and Chishaoyao can resolve heat-toxin within stasis and obstruction. Heat in phlegm can be removed by Beimu and Tianhuafen. Disharmony of qi and blood can be treated with Gancao, Chenpi, and Danggui.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 川芎), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 荆芥), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishaoyao, 白芍药), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连), Equiseti Herba (Muzei, 木贼), Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi, 蔓荆子), Tribuli Fructus (Bajili, 白蒺藜), Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganjuhua, 甘菊花).
For liver meridian heat accumulation causing eye pain after the eruption, this formula is indicated.
The eyes are the orifices of the liver. The liver belongs to the Wood element; it prefers dispersion and dislikes stagnation. Therefore, dispersion leads to smooth flow, while stagnation leads to heat and pain. This formula uses Fangfeng, Bajili, Jingjie, Muzei, Manjingzi, and Ganjuhua; although they clear wind-heat of the liver meridian, their primary function is actually to disperse it, ensuring smooth flow. To harmonize the blood of the liver region, Danggui and Shaoyao are used. To harmonize the qi of the liver region, Gancao and Chuanxiong are used. Additionally, Huanglian is used to drain heart-fire; according to the principle "drain the child when the mother is excess," it is therefore employed.
