Jiu Honghua (Radix Bupleuri prepared with wine), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (each 1 qian), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) (8 fen), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) (4 fen), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gancao Jie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma node), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 5 fen).
For mild cases of pox accompanied by macules, this formula is the primary treatment.
Macules that are pale red indicate a mild condition. Treating macules in pox differs from those in Shanghan (Cold Damage) and miscellaneous diseases. For macules in Shanghan, cold and cool-natured herbs are preferred. For macules in pox, using cold herbs causes blood stasis, preventing the pox from erupting. For macules in miscellaneous diseases, warm-tonifying methods are occasionally used. For macules in pox, using tonifying methods causes blood extravasation, making the macules more severe. This formula uses Jiu Honghua, Danggui, and Chishao Yao to invigorate blood within the macules. Qianhu, Baizhi, Chenpi, and Jingjie are used to promote the flow of qi in the interior and exterior. Additionally, Huisui Zi (Coriandri Fructus), Gancao Jie, and Jiu Yujin (Curcumae Radix prepared with wine) are used to dissipate stagnant qi. These drugs harmonize Ying (Nutrient Qi) and Wei (Defensive Qi), possessing neither cold nor hot properties, thus truly grasping the principle of treating pox macules. The Master said: The origin of macule syndromes lies in the failure to clear heat and resolve toxicity during the initial stage. If heat and toxicity were cleared and resolved initially, how could macules appear?
Sheng Daimao (Trionycis Carapax), Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (3 qian), Shuizhi (Hirudo) (stir-fried until yellow, 1 qian), Wugong (Scolopendra), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed) (1 liang).
Form into pills using pig tail blood, sized like longan seeds. Take one pill per dose, twice daily. Mild sweating after administration is auspicious.
For pox presenting with dark red or black macules, accompanied by delirious speech and irritability, this pill is the primary treatment.
This originally was a excess-heat syndrome. Failure to clear heat and resolve toxicity led to macules appearing within the pox. Improper treatment exacerbates the heat, causing the macules to turn dark red or black. If pressing the macules with fingers causes the blood color to disperse, it is treatable. In this formula, Sheng Daimao resolves toxicity and transforms macules; Wugong guides out toxicity and transforms toxic pathogens; Shuizhi disperses blood stasis and breaks blood clots; Pian Nao moves qi and opens orifices; Ma Huang penetrates the muscle layer and reaches the exterior. Combined with pig tail blood, the intention is to utilize its dynamic nature without stagnation.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, stir-fried), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried until black, equal parts).
For cases of excessive internal heat congestion, this formula is the primary treatment.
Without heat, toxins certainly cannot be transformed; if heat is congested, toxins also fail to transform. Therefore, Huanglian is used to drain Heart Fire, Huangqin to drain Lung and Liver Fire, Huangbai to drain Kidney Fire, and Zhizi to drain fire in both the upper and lower jiao. Since there are no other concurrent symptoms and only heat congestion exists, the medication is precise and specialized.
