Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (2 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (3 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), prepared with honey (1 qian), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) (use 5 fen to 7 fen each time).
For cases where Qi deficiency causes the top of the acne/pox to sink, this formula is the primary treatment.
Qi is the force that nourishes all things. When Qi is abundant, things are strong; when Qi is weak, things decline. Therefore, sinking tops of pox are attributed to Qi deficiency. Wei Guiyan stated in his own discussion: "Ren Shen benefits the interior, Gan Cao harmonizes the middle, and for strengthening the exterior, Huang Qi should be used; to assist Yang, one must rely on Guan Gui." The first three ingredients embody the structure of the "Three Powers" (Heaven, Earth, Human), while the last ingredient supports life in critical danger.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata).
For cases where the base of the pox is pale due to blood weakness, this formula is the primary treatment.
By the fifth or sixth day of the pox, Qi is respected and Blood attaches. If the base of the pox is pale, it indicates blood weakness. Therefore, Dang Gui is used to invigorate blood, Chuan Xiong to promote blood circulation, Shu Di Huang to tonify blood, and Shao Yao...
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), Zi Cao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi Radix) (each 1 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) (1.5 qian, extracting juice is better).
For conditions of blood heat and stagnation, use this formula to invigorate blood and clear heat.
Purple color indicates blood heat; withered/dry color indicates blood stasis. Heat is cooled, dryness is moistened; this is the way to regulate blood. In this formula, Sheng Di Huang is an herb that clears heat from the blood...
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix).
For conditions where the exterior is deficient and the interior is excess, and both Qi and Blood are weak, this formula is the primary treatment.
Regarding the exterior, a grayish-sunken top of the pox indicates Qi deficiency, and a pale base indicates Blood deficiency. If breathing is heavy and coarse, it indicates interior excess. For Qi deficiency, Ren Shen, Huang Qi, and Gan Cao are used. For Blood deficiency, Dang Gui, Shao Yao, and Chuan Xiong are used. However, Fang Feng, Bai Zhi, and Rou Gui can guide the various herbs from the interior to support the exterior; Mu Xiang, Jie Geng, and Hou Po can regulate stagnation and excess to return to harmony. Modifications: For red, purple, black, and sunken lesions belonging to heat-toxin, remove Rou Gui and add Zi Cao, Hong Hua, and Huang Qin. For pale, white, gray, and sunken lesions belonging to deficiency-cold, add Ding Xiang to warm the interior and Rou Gui to warm the exterior. For cases that should suppurate but do not, double the dosage of Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Dang Gui, and Nuomi (Glutinous Rice), decoct until cooked, then add human milk and good wine.
