Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 2 qian) Dangguiwei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis caudex, soaked in wine, baked dry) Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, soaked in wine and stir-fried) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Rhizoma) Jiu Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii, treated with wine, each 5 qian) Xuejie (Sanguis Draconis, 1 qian)
Take 3 qian per dose.
This formula is indicated for acne variolae (smallpox/rubella-like eruptions) characterized by Qi and Blood stagnation.
Qi values unobstructed flow rather than stagnation; Blood values active circulation rather than coagulation. Muxiang and Chuanxiong regulate Qi stagnation. Shaoyao, Dangguiwei, Zicao, Honghua, Xuejie...
Huashi (Talcum, processed by water levigation) Chencha (Cinnabar, processed by water levigation, each 1 qian) Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum, 3 li)
Mix 1 qian with cold water and take orally each time.
This formula is indicated for acne variolae characterized by Blood-heat leading to dryness and astringency.
When Fire flares upward, Water dries up, resulting in dryness and astringency. Huashi and Chencha are used to guide out the Heat, embodying the principle of "removing firewood from under the pot." Bingpian is added to ensure rapid delivery of the medicinal effect without obstruction.
Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, raw) Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata or Recens, equal parts)
This formula is indicated for conditions involving bleeding, blood loss, or Blood-heat.
The Heart governs Blood; Shengdihuang is used to cool Heart-Blood. The Liver stores Blood; Baishaoyao is used to harmonize Liver-Blood. Fire can carry Blood; Mudanpi is used to clear [Heat] from the Blood...
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Fuling (Poria) Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis, each 1 qian)
This formula is indicated for acne variolae presenting as vesicles/blisters.
There is excess Heat within and retained Water in the diaphragm. Damp-Heat moves outward; initially the eruption color is bright and crystal clear, but soon all eruptions become vesicles. This signifies that Water fails to moisten downward, analogous to fuel burning at the bottom of the stove causing bubbles in the pot. In this formula, Baizhu is sweet and drying, benefiting Earth (Spleen) to prevent overflow. Fuling is sweet and bland, benefiting Earth to drain defenses. Zexie is salty and moistening, promoting downward movement and diuresis. When Water and Dampness are drained, the vesicles will naturally heal.
Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis)
This formula is indicated for middle Qi deficiency where the acne variolae fail to swell/erupt.
The Nan Jing states: "Qi provides warmth." Thus, Qi is the force that nurtures all things. If acne variolae fail to swell, it is due to weak Qi. Therefore, Renshen and Huangqi are used...
