Dried Ginger (Shengjiang), Poria (Fuling) (each 4 qian); Roasted Licorice Root (Zhigancao), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu) (stir-fried, each 2 qian).
Shenzhuo disease (a condition where cold-dampness lingers in the region of the Kidney) is caused by dampness. The waist feels cold as ice, and there is a sensation of an object attached to it; this formula is indicated for such cases.
The Kidney governs water, and the Spleen governs dampness. When dampness prevails, it flows and inevitably returns to the Kan (Water) trigram/organ, which is its natural tendency; hence it is called "Shenzhuo" (Lingering in the Kidney). The waist is the mansion of the Kidney, and dampness is a Yin pathogen.
Therefore, it causes the waist to feel cold as ice; the sensation of an object attached is due to the lingering of excess pathogens. Dried Ginger is a pungent and hot substance. Its pungency corresponds to the dryness of Metal, and its heat corresponds to the command of Yang. Dryness can overcome dampness, and Yang heat can rapidly dispel dampness; thus, it is used based on the principle of taking images (Xiang). Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome and Licorice Root are sweet and warm substances. Their sweetness corresponds to the flavor of Earth, and their warmth corresponds to the Qi of Earth. When Earth Qi is strong, it can control dampness; therefore, they are used to assist in treatment. White Poria is a sweet and bland substance. Sweetness tonifies Earth to prevent Water overflow, and blandness opens orifices to promote diuresis; this reflects the strategy of leaving a gap when besieging an enemy.
Pig Kidney (one piece), Green Salt (Qingyan) (3 qian), Eucommia Bark (Duzhong) (powdered, 5 qian).
First, split the pig kidney open, then insert the Green Salt and Eucommia powder inside. Wrap it in wet paper and bake/cook until done. Take on an empty stomach.
This formula is indicated for mild lower back pain.
The *I Ching* states: "Things are selected by category, and objects are grouped by kind." Therefore, pig kidney can tonify the waist. The medical classics state: "When the five flavors enter the mouth, salty flavor enters the Kidney first." Therefore, Green Salt can guide the medicine downward. Eucommia is pungent and sweet, a substance that benefits the Kidney. Using pig kidney as the sovereign herb and Green Salt as the assistant/herb, the medicinal power goes directly to the Kidney to tonify it.
Preface: Hernia (Shan) is a hidden ailment. There are seven types of syndromes, and all seven have deficiency and excess patterns. Here, we examine the Seven Forms to record the seven types of hernias. As for distinguishing between deficiency and excess, it depends on the physician's flexibility and adaptation.
Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) (each 3 qian), Ginseng Root (Renshen) (1 qian), Jujube (Dazao) (two pieces), Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi) (2 qian).
Decoct in water and take cool.
Cold hernia accompanied by lower back pain, radiating to the testicles, with the legs bent and unable to extend, and a deep and slow pulse at the Chi position; this formula is indicated.
Hence the term "Seven Hernias," referring to Cold Hernia, Water Hernia, Sinew Hernia, Blood Hernia, Qi Hernia, Fox Hernia, and Scrotal Hernia. The cause of Cold Hernia must be cold pathogens lodging in the lower body, akin to sitting in a low, cold place or wading into a cold abyss. Cold Qi enters from the exterior into the interior, binding the Lesser Fire and stagnating Liver Qi, thus causing lower back pain. The pain radiating to the testicles occurs because the Liver meridian circles the genitalia. Cold governs contraction and pulling, thus causing the legs to bend and not extend. The Chi position governs the waist; a deep and slow pulse are both Yin pulses, clearly indicating Cold.
Therefore, the pungent and hot properties of Evodia Fruit and Prepared Aconite Root are used to warm and dispel cold. The pungent and warm properties of Fresh Ginger and Jujube are used to harmonize Qi. After injury by pathogens, the healthy Qi must be deficient; the tonifying action of Ginseng Root can remove this deficiency.
