Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), processed with salt and wine; Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), stir-fried; Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), each 3 liang; Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), 4 liang, roasted with suet; Hu Jinggu (Pantheris Ossium Tibialis), 1 liang, roasted with suet.
Formed into pills using mutton flesh.
This is also a formula for treating deficiency and damage of essence and blood in the yin aspect.
"Hu" (Tiger) represents yin; "Qian" means to hide or conceal. This formula aims to seal and secure essence and blood, hence it is called "Hu Qian". In the human body, yang is often in excess, while yin is often deficient. Huangbai and Zhi Mu serve to nourish yin. Dihuang, Danggui, and Shaoyao serve to nourish blood. Niuxi can guide the various herbs downward; Suoyang prevents the leakage of yin essence.
The turtle possesses the most concentrated yin qi from heaven and earth, thus it is used to tonify yin. The tiger possesses the strongest yin qi from heaven and earth, thus it is used to strengthen bones. Chenpi serves to promote the movement of stagnation, while the use of mutton lies in its tonifying properties. For cross-reference, see the section on Hernia (Shan).
Shudihuang (2 liang); Chuan Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix); Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), each 1.5 liang; Shanzhuyu Rou (Corni Fructus); Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), stir-fried with ginger juice, removing silk fibers; Bai Fuling (Poria); Bajitian (Morindae Officinalis Radix), heart removed; Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), stir-fried; Xiaohuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus), stir-fried; Rongzong (Cistanches Herba); Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), heart removed, each 1 liang; Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma); Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), each 5 qian.
Formed into pills using red date flesh.
This is a formula for balanced tonification of both yin and yang.
Dihuang, Niuxi, Duzhong, Shanzhuyu, Wuweizi, and Gouqizi are yin-nourishing herbs. Bajitian, Rongzong, Huixiang, Yuanzhi, Shichangpu, Shanyao, Fuling, and Hongzao are yang-nourishing herbs. Those that nourish yin are moistening but not cold; those that nourish yang are warming but not hot. The stability of formulas established by Master Danxi largely follows this principle. It is particularly suitable for middle-aged individuals.
Sheng Liuhuang (Raw Realgar? No, Sulfur) (1 jin); Zhu Zang (Porcine Stomach/Intestine) (2 chi long).
Grind the Liuhuang into fine powder, fill it completely into the Zhu Zang, boil until soft for two shichen (4 hours), then remove and discard the Zhu Zang. Mix with steamed dough to form pills, sized like wutong seeds. Take 10 pills per dose, gradually increasing the amount.
This formula is indicated for Cold Lao (consumptive disease due to cold) presenting with emaciation, exhaustion of qi and blood, continuous tooth loss, fatigue of the four limbs, and weak voice.
In the human body, there exists a True Fire (Zhen Huo), residing in the right kidney, circulating through the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), entering and exiting the Gallbladder (Jia Dan), and obeying the Heart (Tian Jun). This fire warms the entire skeleton, nourishes the zang-fu organs, and fills the seven orifices. This fire is the father of all things; thus it is said: Heaven cannot generate all things without this fire, and humans cannot have life without this fire. If this fire extinguishes, all things lose their father; thus flesh becomes thin and emaciated, blood becomes depleted and withered, bones become weak and teeth fall out, sinews become weak and limbs become fatigued, and qi becomes weak and speech becomes faint. Liuhuang is the essence of fire, so it is used to tonify fire. However, its nature is excessively hot and toxic, so it is boiled with Zhu Zang to mitigate its toxicity. Some say: Worldly formulas treat Lao with cold and cooling substances, yet Liuhuang is rarely used by people today. To use it for treating Lao, who would not be astonished? I say: Using cold for heat, and heat for cold, is the classic theory of Xiong Shi (Li Dongyuan); "Tangye" states: Liuhuang is also called General; it can break evil and return to righteousness, clear stagnation and restore purity, bring forth yang essence, eliminate yin po, and generate hun. Thus, ancient physicians also praised it. Dai Yuanli, a high disciple of Danxi, said: All cold and cooling substances cause stagnation, only Huanglian is cold without causing stagnation. All hot substances are drying, only Liuhuang is hot without being drying. Thus, Dai also praised it. Why deviate from the principles in one's heart to seek conformity with the vulgar? Previously, an official in Renhe suffered from premature aging; after taking this formula, he lived to over ninety years old. This is a past verification, recorded in "Leibian". Others such as Fan Wenzheng Gong's Jin Ye Dan, "Defang"'s Yu Zhen Wan, "Heji"'s Lai Fu Dan, Ban Liu Wan, Ling Sha Dan, "Baixuan"'s Er Qi Dan, "Reren"'s Fan Yin Dan, and Yang Shi's Zi Xia Dan, often all use Liuhuang, but their respective indications differ, so no further elaboration is needed here.
Those taking Liuhuang must avoid pig blood, sheep blood, cow blood, and the blood of all birds and beasts. Be cautious!
