Deer Antler (prepared with blood, ten jin) Tortoise Plastron (five jin) Lycii Fructus (Sanqi Liang) Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Shiwu Liang)
The above ingredients are decocted into a gelatin using a lead pot according to standard procedures. Initially, dissolve one qian and half in wine for oral administration, gradually increasing the dose to three qian, taken on an empty stomach.
For conditions of extreme essence depletion, characterized by nocturnal emission during dreams, emaciation, shortness of breath, and blurred vision, this formula is indicated.
Essence, Qi, and Spirit are the Three Treasures of the body. The Master said: Essence generates Qi, and Qi generates Spirit. Therefore, when essence is extremely depleted, it cannot generate Qi, resulting in emaciation and shortness of breath. When Qi is insufficient, it cannot generate Spirit, resulting in blurred vision. Turtles and deer possess the most complete Yin Qi; their antlers and plastrons are the parts where Qi is most concentrated in their bodies. Thus, their gelatin is used to tonify Yin Essence. Using substances belonging to the category of Blood and Qi for tonification follows the principle of "tonifying by similarity." Ginseng excels at consolidating Qi; when Qi is consolidated, Essence does not leak. Lycium fruit excels at nourishing Yin; when Yin is nourished, Fire does not flare up. With the action of this medicine, Essence increases daily, Qi becomes stronger daily, and Spirit becomes more vigorous daily.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) Paeoniae Alba Radix (Baishao) Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) Poria (Fushen) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each one qian) Moutan Cortex (Danpi) Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi) (each seven fen)
Beyond the Six Extremes, there are also Seven Injuries. The first is that excessive anger causes rebellious Qi to injure the Liver. When the Liver is injured, there is a deficiency of Blood and dim vision; this formula is suitable for treatment.
The Classics state: The Liver is the official of the General, thus governing anger. Anger causes Qi to rebel; when Qi rebels, Blood also rebels, leading to a deficiency of Blood. The eyes are the orifice of the Liver.
It is also said: The eyes can see only when they receive nourishment from Blood. Now, because the Liver is injured and deficient in Blood, vision becomes dim. Yue Ren (Bian Que) stated: The East (Wood) is often full/excess, so the Liver has draining methods but no tonifying methods; even if rebellious Qi self-injures, draining it constitutes tonification. This formula is named Xiaoyao (Free and Easy Wanderer), implying the meaning of dispersing and unblocking. Chaihu can ascend, thereby venting rebellious Qi.
Shaoyao can astringe, thereby reducing excess. Danpi and Zhizi can clear and drain, thereby attacking excess pathogenic factors. When Wood is excessive, Earth declines; Baizhu and Gancao support the element that is overcome. When the Liver is injured, Blood pathology occurs; Danggui is used to nourish Blood. When Wood is excessive, Fire becomes dry/hot; Fushen is used to calm the Heart and Spirit.
