Coptidis Rhizoma (50 g, moistened with wine) Cinnabaris (30 g, prepared by water levigation) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (washed with wine) Rehmanniae Radix Recens (washed with wine) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (each 15 g)
Second scenario: Worry and overthinking damage the Heart. When the Heart is damaged, one suffers from startle and forgetfulness, and cannot sleep at night; this formula treats such conditions.
Worry and overthinking cause fire to arise in the Heart. When the Heart is damaged, the Shen (Spirit) becomes unsettled, hence prone to startle. The Heart governs Blood; when damaged, Blood becomes insufficient, hence prone to forgetfulness. Rehmanniae Radix Recens cools the Heart, while Angelicae Sinensis Radix nourishes Blood. Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle is used to benefit the Spleen. The Spleen is the Child organ of the Heart; it is used so that it does not consume Qi from its Mother organ (the Heart).

Third scenario: Eating until too full damages the Spleen and Stomach. When the Spleen is damaged, the face appears yellow and there is a tendency to sleep; this formula is suitable for treating such conditions.
The Spleen is the official responsible for granaries; thus, eating until overly full damages it. The Spleen belongs to Central Earth, its color is yellow, and it communicates internally with the Spleen. When the Spleen is damaged, its true color manifests externally, hence the yellow complexion. Shen (Spirit) is generated by Middle Jiao Qi; when the Spleen is damaged, Shen also becomes fatigued, hence the tendency to sleep. The *Neijing* states: "When five flavors enter the mouth, sweet flavor enters the Spleen first." Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Poria cocos, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle are all sweet substances, hence used to tonify the Spleen. In deficiency patterns, one should tonify the Mother organ. Longan Arillus, Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, and Polygalae Radix are used to nourish the Heart to tonify the Mother of the Spleen (Heart). The Spleen's Qi likes to be smooth and free; hence Aucklandiae Radix is used. The Spleen suffers from blood loss; hence Angelicae Sinensis Radix is used. This is a formula specifically for Spleen injury caused by food stagnation. If the condition is food retention, formulas with digestive and resolving agents are used, rather than purely tonifying ones.

Fourth scenario: Cold exposure of the body and consumption of cold drinks damage the Lung. When the Lung is damaged, there is shortness of breath and coughing, and the pulse is faint and slow; this formula is suitable for treating such conditions.
"Body exposed to cold" refers to deficiency-cold of the Body Qi. "Consumption of cold drinks" refers to drinking cold substances. Heat makes Qi vigorous; cold makes Qi timid. Now, the Lung is damaged by cold, hence causing shortness of breath. Cold water qi shoots up to the Lung, which cannot accommodate it, hence causing coughing. A faint pulse indicates deficiency; a slow pulse indicates cold. To treat Lung damage, one benefits Qi; hence Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle are used. For cold patterns, one warms them; hence Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata and Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum are used.
