Scallion White (Four stems) Dried Ginger (One tael) Aconite Root (One piece) Human Urine (Five he) Pig Bile (One he)
Fifth: Prolonged sitting in damp places injures the Kidney. When the Kidney is injured, there will be shortness of breath and lower back pain, cold extremities with coldness below, and a faint pulse at the Chi position; this formula should be used to treat it.
The Kidney is the Water organ; dampness belongs to its category, so it is easily invaded and injured upon exposure. Regarding human respiration, exhalation is governed by the Heart and Lung, while inhalation is governed by the Kidney and Liver. When the Kidney is injured, inhalation becomes weak, thus causing shortness of breath. The waist is the mansion of the Kidney; when the Kidney is injured, lower back pain occurs as a natural consequence. Dampness is Yin, and its nature is cold. When Yin accumulates in the lower part, Yang is repelled to the upper part, resulting in cold extremities and coldness below. The Chi position corresponds to Yin; a faint Yin pulse indicates coldness in the lower body. Dried Ginger and Aconite Root are hot substances that can restore Yang and dry dampness. The Master said: "When the Sun is at its zenith, the cold become warm, and the damp become dry." Therefore, Ginger and Aconite can treat cold-dampness. Scallion White is acrid and warm, capable of unblocking Kidney Qi. Human Urine and Pig Bile are cold in nature and yin in quality. They are used for two reasons: first, to restrain the heat of Ginger and Aconite so as not to make them too drying and harsh in the Upper Jiao where there is no disease; second, to align with the nature of cold-dampness and guide Ginger and Aconite directly to the diseased area in the Lower Jiao. This is assisting with what is beneficial and harmonizing with what is appropriate, acting like a guide in military strategy.
Astragalus Root (One tael each) Saposhnikovia Root (One tael each) Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Two taels)
Sixth: Wind, rain, cold, and dampness injure the physical form. When the form is injured, the skin becomes withered and rough; this formula should be used to treat it.
External exposure to wind and rain inevitably involves cold and dampness. Since it comes from outside, it injures the form and causes the skin to become withered and rough. However, between the skin lies the Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). The *Ling Shu* states: "Wei Qi warms the muscle tissue, fills the skin, thickens the interstices, and controls opening and closing." Therefore, by vigorously tonifying the Wei Qi, the physical form can recover. Astragalus Root is sweet and warm, a supreme herb for tonifying the exterior. With the addition of Saposhnikovia Root, its efficacy becomes even faster, hence they are used in equal amounts. Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome strengthens the Spleen, and the Spleen governs the muscles; therefore, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome is used in double dosage. All three herbs are qi-tonifying substances. The *Nei Jing* says: "For those with insufficient form, warm them with Qi." This refers to this principle. The formula is named *Yu Ping Feng San* (Jade Windscreen Powder), because it tonifies the Wei Qi sufficiently to serve as a protective screen for our body.
