Ren Shen Lu (Ginseng Rhizome, ground into powder)
Mix with water and take one or two qian. Alternatively, mix with Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) and take orally.
It has the effect of resolving phlegm and clearing fire, and its nature is quite mild. However, when used for inducing vomiting, it may lack sufficient strength.

Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit) fourteen pieces; Dan Chi (Light Fermented Soybean) four he
Take to induce slight vomiting.
The annotation mentions treating conditions after sweating, vomiting, or purging in Shang Han (Cold Damage), such as deficiency vexation, insomnia, inner restlessness, and body heat. The phrase "after sweating, vomiting, or purging" should be carefully understood: it means either after sweating, where the exterior is resolved but interior heat remains; or after vomiting, where phlegm-qi is calmed but yang pathogenic factors remain; or after purging, where interior stagnation recedes but exterior pathogenic factors are not yet cleared. This refers to a single scenario, not necessarily implying that all three methods were used simultaneously. Modern readers often interpret this literally, mistakenly assuming all three methods were applied together. Even a strong man could hardly endure such treatment. Moreover, if all three methods had been used, would there still be residual pathogens? Failing to understand this dynamic context leads to grave errors! Zhang Zhongjing uses Zhi Zi to gently direct heat from the Upper Jiao downward; and uses Dou Chi to open and resolve the muscle layer. This is truly an extraordinary prescription. Its various modifications also contain profound principles and should not be read hastily.

Zao Jiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit) four stalks (skin and strings removed, roasted); Bai Fan (Alumen) one liang
Grind together into powder, mix with warm water, and take five fen. Alternatively, add Li Lu (Veratrum Rhizome).
Using emesis to treat diseases of the Upper Jiao originates from the Nei Jing (Inner Canon), while the prescription itself comes from Zhang Zhongjing. Ancient people had robust constitutions and could tolerate such methods. In later generations, however, cunning thoughts increased, desires deepened, vital Qi was severely damaged, and innate endowment became thin. Once emesis is induced, sweating and panting occur, leading to myriad complications. Later physicians dare not use it lightly, which reflects a prudent approach. For instance, Xi Xian San (Thin Saliva Powder) is extremely potent and can break through barriers to save patients with sudden phlegm emergencies. Yet, even then, there is a warning to administer medication slowly after awakening, as phlegm cannot be entirely eradicated at once! Thus, it is known that weak individuals and ordinary conditions should not lightly undergo emesis therapy.

Shao Yan (Burnt Salt); Re Tong Bian (Hot Child's Urine)
Drink three times, inducing vomiting each time.
Sha Zheng (Sand Disease) only manifests at the stage of "Yuan". Before "Yuan", there was only the name of Huo Luan (Cholera-like disorder), without the concept of "Sha Zheng". When one wishes to vomit but cannot, and wishes to defecate but cannot, Yin and Yang are inverted, Qi is closed, and Blood coagulates. The condition is extremely dangerous, so administering medicine or food is contraindicated. Using Shao Yan and Re Tong Bian to induce vomiting is appropriate. However, external acupuncture at Ren Zhong, Shao Shang, Wei Zhong, and the tip of the tongue must be performed, followed by manual massage of these acupoints to promote bloodletting. Only then will the hair follicles open, allowing Qi to gradually circulate.
