Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, processed by water flotation) Gualuan Ren (Trichosanthis Semen, oil removed) Haishi (Pumex, stir-fried until black) Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried until black) Hezi Rou (Terminalia Chebula Retocarp, mesocarp)
Grind these ingredients into fine powder in equal proportions, and form pills with honey. Hold in the mouth to dissolve slowly. If cough is severe, add Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed).
Cough with blood-tinged sputum is indeed caused by the invasion of the Lung by Ministerial Fire and Sovereign Fire. This formula only clears heat/fire without directly treating blood, embodying the principle that removing the disturbance allows things to settle naturally. However, since bleeding has already occurred, the Lung has been severely damaged; how can it be ignored or left unaddressed? It is better to remove Hezi and add herbs that nourish Lung Yin, which would be more appropriate.
Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma)
Grind into powder. Take two qian each time, swallowing with rice gruel decoction before going to bed.
Only Baiji can repair damaged lungs, which is why it is named "Du Sheng" (Solely Holy Herb).
Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) ten liang Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) Shishuang (Diospyros Kaki Frost) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) two liang Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) three liang
Form pills with honey.
This method contains ascending and dispersing properties within cooling agents. It is not merely applying the principle of "dispersing fire stagnation," but also because without this approach, the Upper Jiao cannot be effectively cleared and resolved.
Tongbian (Urine of a healthy child).
Select urine from an eleven or twelve-year-old boy who is free of disease, does not consume meat or pungent/spicy foods, and is clear as water. Discard the initial and final portions, and drink while hot. In winter, warm it with decoction, or mix with Ouzhi (Nelumbinis Nucifera Juice) for consumption.
Tongbian represents true Yin essence, and its source has no desires. Using it to nourish Kidney Yin and descend fire is indeed a wonderful product for treating hemorrhage.
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) five fen Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) one qian each Renshen (Ginseng Radix) three fen Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) three fen Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) five grains Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) five fen
Take hot.
Mahuang Renshen Tang (Ephedra and Ginseng Decoction) does not teach people to use dispersing herbs when tonifying the Middle Jiao; rather, it teaches people to use tonifying herbs when using dispersing methods. People with deficient Qi and Blood are prone to external contractions. When Wind-Cold penetrates deeply, surface dispersion is unavoidable. If one were to directly use formulas like Mahuang Tang or Guizhi Tang, after inducing sweating, the deficient Yang would be on the verge of collapse. Dongyuan established this formula to treat individuals with deficiency...
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) one liang five qian Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) one liang Danpi (Moutan Cortex) Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) two qian five fen
Take five qian per dose.
Xijiao resolves macules and detoxifies, cools the blood and clears the Heart, and can guide Shengdihuang directly to the Kidney Meridian to strengthen Water and control Fire. Therefore, it is frequently used in cases of hematemesis and epistaxis. However, while it is sufficient for treating the Heart and Kidney, it is not the primary herb for the Lung and Liver. For treating epistaxis, Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu) is more effective. The claim that Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) can replace Xijiao is particularly absurd. Since there is already stagnant fire, adding wind-dispersing herbs will force blood upward, leading to failure almost immediately!
