Cinnabar (Zhusha) 1 liang, Frankincense (Ruxiang), Ziziphus Seed (Zaoren) 5 qian. Mix with warm wine and take orally. This formula treats phlegm disorders accompanied by calming the spirit (Dingjing).
Alum (Baifan) 3 liang, Curcuma Aromatica (Yujin) 7 liang, Mint (Bohe). Make into pills using paste. This formula treats phlegm disorders accompanied by resolving depression (Jieyu).
Aconitum Kusnezoffii Root (Baifuzi, raw use), Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing, raw use) 2 liang, Pinellia Tuber (Banxia, soaked in water, skin removed, raw use) 1 liang, Aconitum Carmichaelii Lateral Root (Chuanwu, skin and navel removed, raw use) 5 qian. Grind into fine powder, place in a silk bag, and agitate in water to extract the powder. If not fully extracted, shake and agitate again until complete. Store in a porcelain basin; expose to sun during the day and dew at night: five days in spring, three days in summer, seven days in autumn, ten days in winter. After drying, make into pills the size of mung beans using rice paste. Take 20 pills per dose with ginger decoction. This formula treats phlegm disorders accompanied by dispelling wind (Qufeng).
Arisaema Cum Bile (Danning) 8 qian, Aucklandia Root (Muxiang) 2 qian. Grind into fine powder and take orally. This formula treats phlegm disorders accompanied by promoting qi circulation (Xingqi).
Dichroa Root (Changshan, stir-fried with strong liquor) 2 qian, Tsaoko Fruit (Caoguo, roasted), Areca Seed (Binglang), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu) 1 qian, Mume Fruit (Wumei) 2 pieces, Ginger (Jiang) 3 slices, Jujube (Zao) 1 piece. Decoct with half liquor and half water, leave exposed overnight, and take warm on an empty stomach facing east before sunrise. This formula treats phlegm disorders accompanied by separating yin and yang (Fen Yinyang). Malaria should not be forcibly arrested; those who use this formula often suffer from sequelae, mostly because pathogens are latent internally, damaging spleen qi, leading to distension and fullness.
Dichroa Root (Changshan, stir-fried with wine), Tsaoko Fruit (Caoguo, roasted), Areca Seed (Binglang), Green Tangerina Peel (Qingpi), Magnolia Bark (Houpo), Citrus Reticulata Peel (Chenpi), Licorice Root (Gancao). Equal parts. Decoct with one cup of wine and one cup of water until cooked, cover with silk cotton, leave exposed overnight, and take warm facing east early before the onset of the disease. This is slightly better than the previous formula using Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu) and Mume Fruit (Wumei), but it is still not the orthodox method.
Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Cangzhu, soaked in rice wash water) 2 qian, Magnolia Bark (Houpo, stir-fried with ginger), Citrus Reticulata Peel (Chenpi, white pith removed), Glycyrrhiza Uralensis Root (Gancao, honey-fried) 1 qian. Add ginger and jujube for decoction. Humans cannot sustain life without the spleen and stomach. Irregular diet leads to disease. Excessive consumption of spicy food generates fire; excessive consumption of cold/raw food generates cold; excessive consumption of rich/greasy food generates phlegm and dampness. Consequently, accumulations, distension and fullness, diarrhea and dysentery, and various other symptoms appear. Pingwei San is the supreme remedy for treating spleen and stomach disorders; it promotes diuresis to resolve dampness, transforms stagnation, reduces distension, harmonizes the middle jiao, and also treats epidemic miasma. It is drying but not harsh, thus ranking as the primary formula for digestion-promoting methods.
