The *Neijing* states: Various heat diseases leading to visual confusion (*mao*), convulsions (*yong*), sudden aphonia (*yin*), coma, restlessness, mania, cursing, fright, swelling and pain, rebellious qi rushing upward, trembling as if losing spiritual control, sneezing, vomiting, sores and itching, throat closure, deafness, tinnitus, overflow, vomiting food, blurred vision, convulsions, sudden illness, and sudden death all belong to Fire.
Zhu Danxi said: Humans possess the Five Elements, each with its own nature, but only Fire is characterized by movement. The Heart is the Minister Fire (*Jun Huo*), and there is also the Ministerial Fire (*Xiang Huo*) residing between the Liver and Kidney. This is what the classics refer to as the "Two Fires." All movements belong to Fire; the five senses moving in response to external stimuli constitute the "Five Fires" mentioned in the classics. The Ministerial Fire arises easily; when the Five Fires fan each other, they move recklessly. Fire originates from delusion, changes unpredictably, and constantly boils down the True Yin. Yin deficiency leads to disease; Yin exhaustion leads to death.
Excess Qi becomes Fire. Qi arising from the left side indicates Liver Fire; Qi arising from below the navel indicates Yin Fire; Qi rising from the feet into the abdomen indicates extreme deficiency. Restlessness with thirst indicates Lung Fire; thirst with ability to eat indicates Stomach Fire; heat in the palms indicates Stagnant Fire; restlessness and fever indicate Qi ascending with Fire, which is also Sanjiao Fire. Robust constitution with excess Qi and mania indicates Excess Fire; weak constitution with deficient Qi, fever, and restlessness indicates Deficient Fire.
A floating, rapid, and forceless pulse indicates Deficient Fire; a deep, solid, and large pulse indicates Excess Fire. A surging, rapid pulse at the Left Cun position indicates Heart Fire; at the Right Cun, Lung Fire; at the Left Guan, Liver Fire; at the Right Guan, Spleen Fire; at both feet, Kidney and Mingmen Fire. In men, a surging pulse at both feet indicates seminal emission due to excessive Yin Fire.
