Hematemesis (Vomiting Blood), Epistaxis (Nosebleed), Hemoptysis (Coughing up Blood), Expectoration of Blood, Hematuria (Blood in Urine), Rectal Bleeding (Lower Bleeding)
The Classics state: Ying Qi (Nutrient Qi) is the essence of food and drink, generated by the Spleen, commanded by the Heart, received by the Liver, distributed by the Lungs, and excreted by the Kidneys, irrigating the entire body. Therefore, the eyes can see when nourished by it, the ears can hear, the hands can grasp, the feet can walk, the Zang organs can produce fluids, and the Fu organs can generate Qi. Thus, the functions of entering and exiting, ascending and descending, moistening, and unblocking are all achieved through this. When injected into the vessels, if insufficient, the pulse is choppy; if abundant, the pulse is full. It is constantly nourished by daily diet, allowing Yang to generate Yin, transforming into blood. Generally, the blood in the human body flows like water within the earth, moving with Qi, penetrating the meridians, and reaching everywhere. Blood becomes Ying Qi (Nutrient Qi), and Qi becomes Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). Ying Qi circulates within the vessels, while Wei Qi circulates outside the vessels, accompanying each other up and down to nourish the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, limbs, and hundred bones. If Ying and Wei Qi become disordered, or are disturbed by the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Sadness, Fear, Fright) and Four Qi (Wind, Cold, Summer Heat, Dampness), various diseases arise. Therefore, contracting disease is easy, but treating it is difficult. Some suffer hematemesis due to overeating or heavy lifting damaging the Stomach Qi; some suffer hemoptysis due to labor damaging the Heart and Lungs; some suffer expectoration of blood due to excessive thinking damaging the Heart; some suffer vomiting of blood due to anger damaging the Liver Qi; some suffer epistaxis due to fire-heat damaging the Lungs; some suffer hematuria due to blood stasis accumulating in the Bladder; some suffer rectal bleeding due to wind-heat in the Large Intestine. Broadly speaking, blood flows recklessly when heated and stops when cooled. All blood disorders arise from heat damaging Qi and causing chaos. Clinicians should examine these conditions in detail.
