Treats sudden collapse and unconsciousness due to stroke (Zhong Feng), with excessive phlegm-saliva, and slurred speech (Li Dongyuan stated: Stroke is not caused by exogenous wind pathogen, but is a disease of the body's own Qi. People over forty years old, during periods of declining Qi, or those whose Qi is damaged by emotions such as worry, joy, or anger, often suffer from this condition; it does not occur in their vigorous youth).
Sheng Nan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile, 1 liang), Sheng Chuan Wu (Sichuan Aconite Root, peeled, raw), Sheng Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, peeled, 5 qian), Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root, 2 qian). Take 1 liang per dose. Add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root).
This formula acts on the Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel, Foot-Yangming Stomach channel, Foot-Jueyin Liver channel, and Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao channel. Nan Xing is acrid and fierce, dispersing wind and eliminating phlegm; Fu Zi is heavy and峻猛 (pungent and hot), warming the Spleen and driving out cold; Chuan Wu (Aconite) is light... [text missing] ...thereby supporting the body's righteous Qi; a small amount of Mu Xiang is added to circulate rebellious Qi. (Yi Guan states: Observing Li Dongyuan’s theory, one should focus on Qi deficiency as the primary pathology. Even if wind pathogens are present, they invade due to deficiency. The Classic says: Where pathogenic factors gather, righteous Qi must be deficient. At this time, how can ordinary medicines penetrate the upper and lower? Urgently administer 1 liang of Sansheng Yin with 1 liang of Ren Shen, decocted and taken orally, and the patient will regain consciousness. This is a formula that unblocks channels and treats phlegm, like a general who breaks through gates to capture kings. One must use about 1 liang of Ren Shen to drive away pathogens and supplement true Qi; otherwise, it will not only be ineffective but lead to failure. Observing ancient physicians' use of Fu Zi and Renshen Fuzi Tang reveals this principle. If symptoms include enuresis, open hands, open mouth, or snoring, it is considered incurable; however, many survive after taking the aforementioned medicine. Yu Jiayan stated: The Zang organs are Yin and can withstand pure Yang medicines...)
(Liu Hejian)
Treats stroke where the tongue is stiff and speech is impossible, and the legs are paralyzed and walking is impossible. This is called Feng Fei (Wind Paralysis) due to the failure of Shaoyin Qi to reach its destination. It requires urgent warming treatment (Feng Fei resembles paralysis. Liu Hejian said: Stroke paralysis is not due to excessive Liver Wind, nor exogenous wind invasion. It is truly caused by improper lifestyle management, leading to a violent surge of Heart Fire and depletion of Kidney Water, which fails to control the Fire. This results in Yin deficiency and Yang excess, with heat qi stagnating, causing mental confusion and loss of sensation, leading to sudden collapse. There are also cases of sudden stroke due to extreme excess of the Five Emotions (anger, joy, worry, sadness, fear), all belonging to severe heat. The common term "wind" refers only to the branch while forgetting the root. Treatment should harmonize the Zang-Fu organs and unblock the meridians; this constitutes treating wind.) Wang Ang adds: This reflects Liu Hejian’s theory emphasizing Fire. Generally, in the Northwest, the wind is harsh; when deficient individuals contract it, it is called True Stroke (Zhen Zhong Feng), and wind-dispersing or purgative drugs may be used. In the South, the climate is low and damp; individuals are weak and Qi-deficient. Even if they exhibit stroke symptoms, it is different in nature, called Similar Stroke (Lei Zhong Feng), and treatment should incorporate tonification.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Root, heart removed), Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit), Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche Stem, wine-soaked), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, processed), Guan Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Fu Ling (Poria), Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome).
This formula acts on the Hand and Foot Shaoyin Kidney/Heart channels, Hand and Foot Taiyin Lung/Spleen channels, and Foot Jueyin Liver channel. Shu Di Huang nourishes the fundamental Yin of the roots; Ba Ji Tian, Rou Cong Rong, Guan Gui, and Fu Zi restore the primordial Yuan Qi... [text missing] ...Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) protects the Lung to nourish the source of Water, allowing Water and Fire to interact, Essence and Qi to gradually flourish, and Wind and Fire to subside naturally. (Yi Guan states: Observing Liu’s theory, he treats Wind as the branch and Fire as the root, unaware that it is actually Fire excess and Water deficiency. Liu originally focused on tonifying the Kidney as the root, as seen in his Dihuang Yinzi. Therefore, for stroke treatment, one must prioritize True Yin deficiency. However, Yin deficiency has two types: Yin-within-Water deficiency and Yin-within-Fire deficiency. For Fire deficiency, Liu Hejian’s Dihuang Yinzi is the primary formula; for Water deficiency, Liuwei Dihuang Wan is primary. If it is Water deficiency, pungent-hot medicines and tonics like Ren Shen and Bai Zhu must not be added. Some ask: When Wind pathogen prevails, treatment should use acrid-cool herbs. Why use Gui Zhi and Fu Zi, which might cause Fire to strengthen and suppress Metal, failing to pacify Wood, thus worsening Wind? The answer is: This is due to Kidney deficiency where True Yin is lost, and solitary Yang flies upward. Without Gui Zhi and Fu Zi, how can scattered Yuan Yang be recovered? Phlegm-saliva surging upward indicates Water not returning to its origin; red face and thirst indicate Fire not returning to its origin. Only Gui Zhi and Fu Zi can guide Fire back to its origin. Once Water and Fire return to their origins, Water generates Wood, Wood does not generate Wind, and...)
