Treats severe cold pain in the heart and chest, vomiting with inability to eat, abdominal cold qi rushing upward, skin rising with visible protrusions resembling heads and feet, upper and lower pain that cannot be touched or approached.
Yang Qi receives Qi in the chest; when Yang is deficient, Yin pathogens can invade. The Yin-cold Qi rebels and rushes upward, obstructing horizontally in the Middle Jiao, thus presenting symptoms of elevation, pain, vomiting, and intolerance to touch. The Heart belongs to Yang, Cold belongs to Yin; when Cold attacks the Heart, Cold and Heat clash violently causing pain; when Cold attacks the Spleen, the Spleen becomes cold and weak, failing to transform food and water. The Heart and Spleen are mother and son... Shu Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, 2 he), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 4 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 2 liang). Decoct, remove dregs, add Yi Tang (Malt Sugar) 1 sheng, simmer slightly, take warm.
This is a formula for the Foot Taiyin and Foot Yangming meridians. Shu Jiao is acrid and hot, enters the Lung to disperse Cold, enters the Spleen to warm the Stomach, enters the Kidney and Mingmen to tonify Fire; Gan Jiang is acrid and hot, unblocks the Heart and assists Yang... It focuses on Qi, using acrid, sweet, and hot herbs to warm and strengthen the central Zang organs, greatly dispelling Yin-cold from the Lower Jiao, and restoring Yang Qi in the Upper Jiao. (Wang Ang notes: Common saying states there is no tonification method for various pains. This condition reaches a point where it cannot be touched, indicating severe pain. Yet Zhang Zhongjing uses major tonifying herbs like Ren Shen and Yi Tang. Does this intend to make people believe in Zhang Zhongjing, or...)
Treats deficiency of Qi and Blood, consumptive damage affecting the spine, shortness of breath, lethargy, progressing toward Lao Zhai (consumptive disease); as well as Yin syndrome with maculae eruption, severe cold with faint pulse. (Yin syndrome maculae eruption may occur due to Qi deficiency in the Middle after sweating, vomiting, or purging; or due to Kidney Qi damage from sexual activity; or from excessive intake of cooling medicines, resulting in Yin syndrome. Cold hides below, forcing rootless and unstable Fire to rush upward, steaming the Lung and causing maculae to appear. The color is pale red, faintly visible on the skin surface, differing from Yang syndrome maculae which are purple-red. This indicates extreme deficiency of Stomach Qi; if cold medicines are taken, danger will ensue immediately. Wu Hegao said: Using Ren Shen, [missing character], Gui Zhi, and Fu Zi to treat maculae is a variation of method. If physicians do not understand flexibility, how can they suffice...)
Huang [missing character] (Honey-fried), Ren Shen, Bai Zhu (Earth-fried), Fu Ling, Gan Cao (Honey-fried), Ban Xia (Ginger-processed), Dang Gui (Wine-washed), Bai Shao ([missing character])...
This is a Qi and Blood formula for the Foot Three Yin and Foot Yangming meridians. Huang [missing character] benefits Wei and strengthens Qi, being the primary herb for tonifying the center; Si Jun Zi Tang tonifies Yang, thereby benefiting Qi (Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Gan Cao); Si Wu Tang tonifies Yin, thereby nourishing Blood (Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Shu Di Huang); when Yin and Yang harmonize, Qi and Blood reside in their proper places. Ban Xia harmonizes the Stomach and strengthens the Spleen, Mai Dong clears the Heart and moistens the Lungs, Rong Rui Cistanche tonifies the insufficiency of Ministerial Fire in Mingmen, Gui Zhi and Fu Zi guide the unstable Fire back to its origin. Within Shi Quan Da Bu Tang, there are added modifications...
Removing Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, Mai Dong, Chuan Xiong, Shu Di Huang, and Rong Rui Cistanche from this formula yields Ba Wei Da Jian Zhong Tang: treats the same conditions. Removing Chuan Xiong and Shu Di Huang from this formula...
Tidal fever and spontaneous sweating, progressing toward Lao Zhai, greatly reduces deficiency heat and generates Qi and Blood. (Yu Jiayan said: Le Ling's Jian Zhong Tang uses Chai Hu and Xi Xin as sovereign herbs, intending to reduce fever, but deficiency-heat from Yin deficiency cannot be reduced; Shi Si Wei Jian Zhong Tang uses Gui Zhi, Fu Zi, and Rong Rui, intending to restore Yang, but Yang from Yin deficiency may not necessarily be restored; this depends on the prescriber's ability to judge appropriately. He also said: Both formulas treat inherent weakness of Zang Qi, simultaneously establishing the Yang of the Spleen and Kidney. Generally, consumptive diseases...)
