Treating Shaoyin disease (Disease of the Lesser Yin) with diarrhea and a faint pulse, administer Baitong Decoction (White Onion Decoction). If the diarrhea does not stop after administration, and the patient presents with cold extremities, absence of pulse, dry retching, and irritability: if the pulse suddenly appears after taking this decoction, death ensues; if the pulse gradually returns slightly, life is preserved. (The Kidney is the gate of the Stomach. The anterior orifice excretes water, and the posterior orifice excretes grain residue. When Cold pathogenic factors invade, they fail to secure and control, resulting in diarrhea.)

This is a formula for the Foot-Shaoyin meridian. The pungency of Scallion White (Congbai) unblocks Yang Qi, while the heat of Ginger and Aconite disperses Yin Cold; this is Baitong Decoction. Following contrary treatment: correct treatment addresses the root cause directly, while contrary treatment addresses the symptoms oppositely; this is what is meant. (Using hot herbs to treat cold diseases, and cold herbs to treat hot diseases, is called Correct Treatment (Zheng Zhi); using hot herbs to treat hot diseases, and cold herbs to treat cold diseases, is called Contrary Treatment (Fan Zhi), also known as Following Treatment (Cong Zhi), meaning following the apparent nature to subdue the true pathogen. Note: Jue syndrome has two types: Yin Jue involves cool body without thirst, and a slow, fine, and faint pulse; Yang Jue involves extreme internal Heat causing apparent cold extremities, accompanied by irritability, thirst, delirium, occasional warmth of the body, and a rapid pulse. Treating Yangming syndrome where eating induces vomiting: if taking the decoction makes it worse, it belongs to the Upper Jiao (Eating inducing vomiting indicates Stomach Cold; worsening after taking decoction indicates Taiyang Heat vomiting); Shaoyin syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea, cold extremities, and extreme irritability (Vomiting consumes Yang, diarrhea damages Yin. Cold extremities indicate severe Yin Cold; irritability indicates internal struggle of Yang Qi); Jueyin syndrome with dry retching, spitting saliva/phlegm, and headache (The Jueyin meridian runs alongside the stomach; dry retching and spitting phlegm indicate internal rejection by Cold; the Jueyin meridian ascends to the vertex; headache indicates upward reversal of Cold. Note: Headache occurs in all three Yang meridians. The Taiyin and Shaoyin meridians do not ascend to the head, so they do not cause headache. Only Jueyin meets the Du meridian at the vertex, causing headache. However, Wind-Warmth in Shaoyin and Damp-Warmth in Taiyin can also cause headache, which cannot be rigidly adhered to. Li Dongyuan said: Taiyin headache must involve Phlegm; Shaoyin headache involves cold feet and rebellious Qi. Although the Taiyin and Shaoyin meridians do not reach the head, Phlegm...) This is a formula for the Foot-Jueyin, Foot-Shaoyin, and Foot-Yangming meridians. For Yangming syndrome with vomiting upon eating, the pungency of Evodia and Ginger warms the Stomach, disperses Cold, and directs Qi downward;

Stomach Cold is different from Taiyang syndrome's aversion to cold and vomiting which are originally Heat syndromes (vomiting due to upward rushing of Fire-Heat), lest one mistakenly use Cold herbs to treat Cold vomiting. If taking Evodia Decoction makes it worse, it still belongs to Taiyang Heat pathogen, clearly not Stomach Cold (Suitable formulas include Ge Gen Jia Ban Xia Decoction, Xiao Chai Hu Decoction, Zhi Zi Chi Tang, Huang Qin Decoction). If Shaoyin syndrome with vomiting, diarrhea, and cold extremities leads to extreme irritability, this is Yin Qi from the Kidney reversing upward, approaching a critical state (Excessive Yin in the Kidney rejects Yang upward, causing vomiting and rebellion), hence Evodia is used to disperse Cold and direct Qi downward, while Ginseng, Ginger, and Jujube assist Yang and tonify Earth (Spleen/Stomach), preventing Yin-Cold from moving up and down, warming the meridians and simultaneously warming the Middle Jiao.
