Guan Yinzi said: Within the human body, there are pinworms and roundworms; on the exterior, lice and nits thrive. All things have their basis in the human body for survival, indicating that our body is a small universe.
It can also transform into various insects, indescribable in form, such as fa zheng (hair-like growth disease), bie jia (turtle-shaped mass), lao zhai (consumptive disease), chuan shen (transmissible corpse disease), etc., leading to death or destruction of the family. The harm caused by insects is so cruel. Therefore, the sages used methods to kill them; if humans cannot kill the insects, the insects will surely kill humans.
(Zhang Zhongjing) Treats Shaoyin Jueyin syndrome of Shanghan (Cold Damage), cold jue with vomiting of roundworms. (In Shanghan, Zang jue leads to death. Zang jue is characterized by a faint pulse and cold extremities. After seven or eight days, the skin becomes cold, irritability occurs, and there is no moment of rest. Hui jue [roundworm jue] occurs when roundworms ascend into the epigastrium causing vexation, which stops after a while. Eating causes vomiting and further vexation because the roundworms emerge upon smelling food. This is due to cold in the viscera, and Wumei Wan should be used.)
Wumei (300 pieces), Xixin (Asari Radix), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 6 liang), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 jin), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 10 liang), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, sweat removed), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 4 liang). Soak Wumei in Kujiu (vinegar) overnight, remove pits, steam until cooked, mix with other herbs, and form honey pills.
This formula acts on the Foot Yangming and Foot Jueyin meridians. Roundworms subside when encountering sourness, hence Wumei's sourness is used to subdue them; roundworms settle when encountering bitterness, hence the bitterness of Huanglian and Huangbai is used to calm them; it also has the effect of astringing Lung Qi. (Vomiting of roundworms is due to Stomach cold, forming Hui jue. It is appropriate to use Lizhong Tang plus fried Chuanjiao (5 grains) and Binglang (Arecae Semen, 0.5 fen), taken with Wumei Wan. Cheng Jiaoqian stated: Wumei Wan adds slight bitter-cold herbs to the sour-pungent Liver-entering formulas, accepting the rebellious Yang pathogen and guiding it downward. Named "Calming Roundworms," it actually "Calms the Stomach," thus also treating chronic dysentery. Any condition of lower diarrhea due to failure of Yin and Yang to connect smoothly can be covered by this formula. The Classic states: Whenever Yin and Yang fail to connect smoothly, Jue occurs. Fang Xingzhong stated: The Classic says, the three Hand-Yin meridians run from abdomen to hand, the three Hand-Yang meridians from hand to head, the three Foot-Yang meridians from head to foot, and the three Foot-Yin meridians from foot to abdomen. Thus, all six meridians connect at the hands and feet. When Yang qi sinks inward and fails to connect smoothly with Yin qi, cold extremities result.)
