Treats conditions in the late summer season where damp-heat steams and roasts, causing fatigue and heaviness in the four limbs, reduced spirit and vitality, chest fullness and shortness of breath, feverish body with irritability, thirst with aversion to food, spontaneous sweating with bodily heaviness, pain in the limbs, dark and scanty urine, loose yellow stools, and a deficient pulse. (This is because summer-dampness steams into the person, injuring Spleen Earth, hence limb fatigue and loose stools; summer-heat injures the Lung, hence shortness of breath.)
Ingredients: Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, stir-fried), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, bran-fried), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith retained), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix).
These are herbs belonging to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Heat injures Qi; Renshen tonifies Qi and secures the exterior; Dampness injures the Spleen; Ershu (Baizhu and Cangzhu) dries dampness and strengthens the Spleen; Excessive Fire damages Metal (Lung) and depletes Water (Kidney), therefore Maidong and Wuweizi are used to protect the Lung and generate fluids (The Lung is the upper source of water; when Fire overacts on Metal, Metal cannot generate Water; Maidong combined with Renshen and Wuweizi generates the Mai Pulse and fluids); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) is used to drain heat and nourish Water; Qingpi regulates the Liver and breaks stagnation; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) nourishes Blood and harmonizes Yin; Shenqu transforms food and eliminates accumulation; Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) resolve muscle-layer heat and raise clear Yang (When clear Yang rises, it can generate fluids. Furthermore, Wind can overcome Dampness; Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) drains damp-heat and descends turbidity; Chenpi regulates Qi; Gancao harmonizes the Middle Jiao; together they tonify Qi and strengthen the Spleen, dispel dampness and clear heat).
Li Dongyuan said: When Spleen deficiency occurs, Lung Qi is first severed; thus Huangqi (Astragali Radix) is used to close the cou li (pores), stop sweating, and tonify Qi; since the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, Yin Fire injures the generating Qi, leading to a great deficit of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi). For Blood deficiency, Renshen is used to tonify; when Yang is robust, it naturally generates Yin Blood. Additionally, Danggui harmonizes Blood, and Huangbai is added to rescue Kidney Water, as sweet-cold herbs drain fire; when fire is extinguished, Heart Qi becomes peaceful and calm. When Heart Fire overacts on Spleen Earth, roasted Gancao is used to drain fire and tonify the Spleen; if the dose is too small, it may cause fullness; if there is middle-jiao fullness, remove it; if there is abdominal urgency, pain, or contraction, it is appropriate to use a larger dose. If there is cough, remove Renshen, because clear and turbid Qi interfere with each other, so Chenpi is used to regulate. In late summer, Dampness prevails, so Ershu and Zexie are added to distribute and eliminate damp-heat from above and below. When Dampness prevails, food is not digested; stir-fried Shenqu is pungent and sweet, Qingpi is pungent and warm, promoting digestion and moving Qi; Wuweizi, Maidong, and Renshen are sour, sweet, and slightly cold, draining fierce heat and benefiting Lung Qi, rescuing Geng Metal (Lung).
Yi Guan states: In cases of injury by summer-heat causing vomiting and epistaxis, the heat injures the Heart; Heart deficiency fails to generate Blood. One should not excessively use cold-cooling herbs to drain Heart Fire; instead, add Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) etc., to the Qingshu Yiqi Tang. Because summer-heat injures both the Heart and Qi, the pulse must be deficient; using Renshen to tonify Qi enables it to control Blood, thus preventing hemorrhage.
Removing Qingpi, Zexie, and Gegen from this formula yields Huangqi Renshen Tang (Dongyuan): Treats summer-heat damaging Yuan Qi, fatigue in late summer, chest fullness with spontaneous sweating, and occasional headaches (intermittent pain indicates an internal injury pattern). Removing Baizhu, Qingpi, Maidong, and Wuweizi, and adding Fuling (Poria), Zhuling (Polyporus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng...
