Clears summerheat qi, eliminates vexation and thirst, stops vomiting, diarrhea, and cholera, as well as injuries caused by alcohol and food during the summer months.
Amomi Fructus (Sha Ren) Cardamomi Fructus (Cao Guo) [roasted, skin removed] Mume Fructus (Wu Mei) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) [roasted with honey. Four liang] Dolichos Lablab Semen (Bian Dou) [roasted, ground] Puerariae Radix (Ge Gen) [Two liang.]
These are medicines for the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Summerheat must be accompanied by dampness, and dampness belongs to Spleen Earth. When summerheat and dampness combine to cause pathogenicity, the Spleen and Stomach become diseased. Therefore, treating summerheat requires first removing dampness.
Amomi Fructus and Cardamomi Fructus are pungent, aromatic, warm, and dispersing; they benefit Qi, invigorate the Spleen, resolve food stagnation from alcohol and diet, and disperse dampness. Dolichos Lablab Semen specifically resolves summerheat in the Middle Jiao (Central Palace) and leaches out dampness (when dampness is excessive, body fluids are not generated, leading to thirst); Puerariae Radix can raise the clear Yang of the Stomach and generate body fluids (Wind-dispersing herbs are mostly drying, only Puerariae Radix can generate fluids); Mume Fructus clears heat and relieves thirst; Glycyrrhizae Radix tonifies Earth (Spleen) and harmonizes the middle.
(Haizang - Zhang Yuansu)
Treats latent summerheat causing vexation and thirst, fever, headache, and dysfunction of the Spleen and Stomach.
Pinelliae Rhizoma (Ban Xia) [boiled dry with five jin of vinegar] Poria (Fu Ling) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) [raw use, half a jin.] Made into pills with Ginger Juice paste, do not expose to raw water. Take down with hot decoction.
These are medicines for the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. In late summer, the weather is hot and steaming, and Damp-Earth commands the season, so summerheat must be accompanied by dampness. Symptoms present as constipation, vexation, and thirst, or vomiting or diarrhea, because when dampness prevails, Qi cannot function and transform properly. This formula does not treat summerheat directly but specializes in treating dampness, using Pinelliae Rhizoma and Poria, which are drugs that promote water metabolism, slightly assisted by Glycyrrhizae Radix to harmonize... [text cuts off]. One liang of this formula plus two qian of Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian) is named Huanglian Shuxia Wan: treats latent summerheat with vexation, thirst, and abundant phlegm-heat.
Treats contracting summerheat and latent heat, drinking too much, Spleen and Stomach affected by dampness, inability to separate water and grain, mixing of clear and turbid, reversal of Yin and Yang Qi, leading to cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, and disharmony of the Zang-Fu organs.
Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Gan Jiang) Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui) Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xing Ren) [skin and tips removed] Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao), equal parts. First roast Glycyrrhizae Radix with white sand, then add Ginger and Armeniacae Semen Amarum and roast, remove the sand, mix with Cinnamomi Ramulus, and grind into powder. Take two qian per dose.
This is a medicine for the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian (adapted from Zhongjing's Taiyang protocol). In summer months, overconsumption of cold drinks and raw foods prevents Yang Qi from extending and rising, causing Qi reversal and resulting in cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea. The Spleen and Stomach prefer dryness and dislike dampness, prefer warmth and dislike cold. Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens and Cinnamomi Cortex/Ramulus disperse cold and dry dampness; Armeniacae Semen Amarum and Glycyrrhizae Radix benefit Qi and regulate the Spleen. All are pungent and sweet, dispersing herbs, raising latent Yang within Yin, which is also a method of contrary treatment. For those injured by summerheat without cold syndromes, one must not adhere rigidly [to this rule] (Summerheat toxin injury involves external Yang and internal Yin, so treatment often uses warm agents, such as Dashun San, Xiangru Yin; Garlic is pungent, hot, and opens orifices, so it is also used. However, there are Yin and Yang syndromes, cold...) [text cuts off]
