Human life depends on a body equipped with five sense organs and hundred bones, possessing the virtue of sage-like wisdom and harmony, which is of great significance. If one does not preserve and nurture oneself, but recklessly harms the body, causing illness midway...
The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) · *Shanggu Tianzhen Lun* (Treatise on the Heavenly Truth of Antiquity) states: People in ancient times followed the laws of Yin and Yang, harmonized with proper techniques, preserved life by having regulated diet and regular daily routines, avoiding excessive labor. Thus, their form and spirit were integrated, allowing them to complete their natural lifespan and pass away at the age of a hundred. People today are different; they treat wine as water, act against the joy of life, have irregular daily routines, and thus become decrepit before fifty. The teachings of the ancient sages to the people were: avoid empty evils and thieving winds in due time; maintain tranquility and emptiness, let the True Qi follow, guard the spirit within, and how could disease arise?
The method of regulating breath penetrates the Three Teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism). On a grand scale, it can lead to Daoist attainment; on a small scale, it can preserve health. Therefore, Shakyamuni Buddha taught to gaze at the tip of the nose, counting inhalations and exhalations as the initial gate of Zhi-Guan (Calmness and Insight) meditation. Zhuangzi's *Nanhua Jing* says: The breath of the perfected person reaches the heels. The *I Ching* (Book of Changes), Sui Hexagram, says: The gentleman rests indoors when evening comes. Wang Longxi said: Ancient perfected persons had breath but no sleep, hence "resting indoors when evening comes." The method of resting should be done at dusk, with ears hearing nothing and eyes seeing nothing... This is described as Yang sinking into Yin.
At any time, sit casually, keep the body straight and upright, relax the limbs, do not lean or bend, unbutton clothes and loosen the belt (if the belt is too tight, the Qi of the upper and lower body will not circulate smoothly, so ensure comfort); stir the tongue in the mouth several times, gently exhale turbid Qi without sound, and gently inhale clear Qi through the nose, either three to five times or one or two times... not coarse... thoughts not arising... wind...
