(Li Dongyuan)
Treats constipation (大便不通), scanty and dark painful urination (小便赤涩), generalized edema of the body and face (身面俱肿), yellowish complexion (色黄), numbness (麻木), heaviness of the body as if weighted down (身重如山), panting with weak breath (喘促无力), vomiting of phlegm and saliva (吐痰唾沫), fever accompanied by restlessness (发热时躁), followed by chills after restlessness subsides (躁已振寒), cold sensation in the neck and forehead (项额如冰), sensation of fire in the eyes (目中溜火), loss of smell (鼻不闻香), pulsation around the umbilicus (脐有动气), and acute pain in the lower abdomen (小腹急痛). (Li Dongyuan stated: These symptoms are likely due to latent damp-heat (湿热) in the Ying blood (荣血), with Wood-Fire (木火) attacking the Yang channels, causing excess in the upper jiao. Shortness of breath and panting indicate Yin fire (阴火) damaging Qi. Flaccidity and weakness of the four limbs indicate insufficiency of Kidney water.)
Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, stir-fried with wine), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, stir-fried with wine), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 2 fen), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baiddoukou (Cardamomi Fructus).
This is a formula treating all three Yang and all three Yin meridians of the foot. The aforementioned conditions are generally caused by injury to both exterior and interior, where Yang Qi is suppressed and cannot ascend, leading to stagnation of Wind, Fire, Dampness, and Heat. Guizhi and Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba - *Note: Text mentions Mahuang in explanation though not in ingredient list provided in snippet*) release the exterior and dispel Wind; Shengma and Chaihu raise Yang and dissipate Fire; Huanglian and Huangbai dry Dampness and clear Heat, while Huangbai also tonifies the Kidney and nourishes Yin.
Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) was once used with Wuweizi... (Text fragmentary)
(Yuan Rong)
Treats external contraction combined with internal injury, fever and headache, nausea, vomiting, cough, phlegm obstructing the middle Jiao, dizziness, epigastric discomfort and irritability, wind-cold diarrhea; as well as persistent fever after sweating in Shanghan (Cold Damage). (Fever and headache indicate external contraction; cough, copious phlegm, vomiting, and diarrhea indicate internal injury; persistent fever after sweating indicates Yin deficiency.)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Gengegen (Puerariae Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, stir-fried with ginger juice), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel, pith removed), Gancao (Licorice Root), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus)... (Text fragmentary regarding "Fire, remove Ren...")
These are herbs for the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians. For Wind-Cold, it is appropriate to release the exterior, hence using Zisu, Gengegen, and Qianhu; for labor-induced internal injury, it is appropriate to tonify the Middle, hence using Renshen, Fuling, and Gancao; Chenpi and Banxia eliminate phlegm and stop vomiting; Zhike and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix & Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) benefit the diaphragm and widen the intestines; Muxiang (Costi Radix) promotes Qi movement and breaks stagnation. When interior and exterior are harmonized, pathogenic factors disperse. (For Yi Yin [Overflowing Drink] presenting with body heaviness and muscle pain, this formula can also be used to harmonize. Liu Zongnong said: This formula derives from Shaoyang Bupleurum-type prescriptions, treating diseases where abnormal pathogens combine with phlegm-fluid retention. The original text states that Qianhu and Gengegen can naturally resolve the muscle layer... Combining with Siwu Tang creates Fuling Buxin Tang, which is especially effective for deficient heat, hematemesis, epistaxis, and hematochezia. It is a formula treating both deficiency/excess and interior/exterior simultaneously, but should not be overused.)
Removing Renshen and Qianhu from this formula, adding Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), decocted with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus), is named Xiongsu Yin (Cowpea and Perilla Decoction) (*Dan Liao*): Treats wind-cold injury, with exterior symptoms of fever, headache, and aversion to cold, and interior symptoms of cough, expectoration, and qi rushing upward. (This may be due to excess heat in the Lung, hence Renshen is removed and Chuanxiong added to serve as an agent for unblocking Yin and Yang and circulating Qi and Blood.)
