The Image of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian (This meridian has abundant blood and scarce Qi): The liver has three lobes on the left and four on the right, totaling seven lobes. Its functional governance is located on the left, while the organ itself resides on the right, attached to the ninth thoracic vertebra of the spine.
The pathway of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian originates at the tuft of hair on the big toe (Dadun, LR1), ascends along the medial margin of the dorsum of the foot (between the big toe, Xingjian, LR2; behind the first metatarsophalangeal joint, Taichong, LR3), passes one cun anterior to the medial malleolus (Zhongfeng, LR4), ascends eight cun above the ankle, crosses posterior to the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, ascends along the medial aspect of the thigh (Ququan, LR8), enters the pubic region, passes through the genitalia, reaches the lower abdomen, flanks the stomach, connects with the Liver, and links with the Gallbladder. It then pierces the diaphragm, spreads over the hypochondriac region, follows the posterior aspect of the throat, enters the nasopharynx (Hangsang), connects with the optic nerve system (Muxi), emerges from the forehead, and meets the Governor Vessel at the vertex. A branch descends from the optic nerve system to the inner cheek, encircling the interior of the lips. Another branch diverges from the Liver, pierces the diaphragm, and flows upward into the Lungs (as stated in the "Meridians Chapter").
When this meridian is disturbed, it causes lower back pain, inability to bend forward or backward, hernia in men, and swelling of the lower abdomen in women; severely, it causes dryness of the pharynx, a dusty complexion, and loss of luster in the skin color. Diseases governed by the Liver include chest fullness, vomiting and reflux, watery diarrhea, fox hernia, urinary incontinence, and strangury with difficulty in urination.
Governor Vessel: The character "Du" means "capital" or "assembly." It runs along the midline of the back and serves as the commander of all Yang meridians; it is one of the Eight Extraordinary Vessels.
The Governor Vessel originates from the lower extremity [text incomplete], runs parallel within the spinal column, ascends to Fengfu (GV16), enters the brain, reaches the vertex, follows the forehead to the nasal bridge, and is regarded as the Sea of Yang Meridians.
The spine consists of twenty-one vertebral segments, plus three cervical vertebrae in the neck, totaling twenty-four segments. Starting from Pingyi [alias for Changqiang], passing through Changqiang (GV1), and ascending along the interior of the spine, it follows the path through Yaoshu, Yangguan, Mingmen (GV4), Xuan Shu, Jizhong (GV12), Jinsuo (GV9), Zhongyang (GV14), Lingtai (GV10), Shendao (GV11), Shenzhu (GV12), passes Fengmen (BL12), and follows Taodao (GV13)...
