For treating wind-cold (Shangfeng), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) is used as the Sovereign herb; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) are used as Minister herbs. The *Classic* states: "Pungent and sweet flavors disperse and belong to Yang." Wind pathogens are suited to pungent-flavored Fangfeng, which is a general remedy for wind diseases; therefore, Fangfeng is the Sovereign, while Gancao and Baizhu are Ministers.
For treating cold damage (Shanghan), Gancao is used as the Sovereign herb; Fangfeng and Baizhu are Ministers. This is because cold pathogens are suited to being moderated by sweet flavors. If there are other syndromes, select from the previously mentioned syndrome-specific remedies, determining dosages according to the Sovereign-Minister-Assistant-Courier hierarchy.
For sudden onset of redness and swelling of the eyes, Fangfeng and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) are used as Sovereign herbs to drain fire; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) are used as Assistant herbs to harmonize blood, along with herbs specific to each meridian.
For chronic eye conditions causing dim vision, Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) and Danggui are used as Sovereign herbs; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Fangfeng are used as Minister herbs, while Gancao and Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos) are used as Assistant herbs.
For dysentery accompanied by abdominal pain, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) and Gancao are used as Sovereign herbs; Danggui and Baizhu are Assistant herbs. If bleeding occurs at different stages, treat according to the theory of Heat in the Triple Burner.
For watery diarrhea, Fuling (Poria) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma; text says "Baimu" likely referring to Baizhu) are used as Sovereign herbs; Shaoyao and Gancao are Assistant herbs.
For various wind diseases, Fangfeng is used as the Sovereign herb, with Assistants selected based on the specific disease.
For cough, Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) is used as the Sovereign herb; if there is phlegm, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) is used as an Assistant; if there is wheezing, Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) is used as an Assistant; whether there is heat or not, Huangqin is used as an Assistant, differing only in dosage.
For difficult urination, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) are used as Sovereign herbs; Fuling and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) are Assistant herbs.
For dampness in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), Cao Longdan (Gentianae Scabrae Radix) and Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) are used as Sovereign herbs; Gancao and Huangbai are Assistant herbs.
For hemorrhoids and fistulas, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Fangfeng are used as Sovereign herbs; Gancao and Shaoyao are Assistant herbs, with modifications based on detailed differentiation of syndromes.
For various sores and ulcers, Huanglian and Danggui are used as Sovereign herbs; Gancao and Huangqin are Assistant herbs.
For malaria, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) is used as the Sovereign herb, with Meridian-guiding herbs selected as Assistants based on the time of onset corresponding to specific meridians.
The above are the general principles of medication. For more detailed syndrome differentiation, modify the previously mentioned syndrome-specific remedies accordingly.
Taiyang (Solar): Qianghuo (Principal); descending use Huangbai.
Yangming (Yang Brightness): Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma); descending use Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum).
Shaoyang (Lesser Yang): Chaihu; descending use Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride).
Taiyin (Greater Yin): Shaoyao.
Shaoyin (Lesser Yin): Zhimu.
Jueyin (Terminal Yin): Qingpi, Chaihu.
Xiaochang (Small Intestine) and Pangguang (Urinary Bladder) belong to Taiyang; Qianghuo is the principal in this formula.
Sanjiao (Triple Burner), Dan (Gallbladder), Gan (Liver), and Xinbaoluo (Pericardium) correspond to Shaoyang and Jueyin, where Chaihu is potent.
Yangming involves Dachang (Large Intestine) and Zu Wei (Foot Stomach); Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Baizhi, and Shengma should be used.
Taiyin Lung Mai (Lung Meridian) originates from Zhongjiao (Middle Burner); Baizhi, Shengma, and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) are suitable.
Pi Jing (Spleen Meridian) differs slightly from Fei Jing (Lung Meridian); Shengma, Shaoyao, and Baizhi require careful distinction.
Shaoyin Xin Jing (Heart Meridian) is primarily governed by Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix); for Shen Jing (Kidney Meridian), Duhuo combined with Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) is beneficial.
Using these herbs as principals to unblock the meridians, what illness could reach Gaohuang (deep-seated critical stage)?
