Words heard by the way and deeds already performed that are forgotten after a long time are termed "forgetfulness" (Wang). If one cannot remember immediately when it happens, and searching within the mind yields absolutely nothing, this is termed "easy forgetfulness" (Jianwang). This condition arises from deficiency of Heart Qi and exhaustion of Kidney Essence, leading to a failure of Water and Fire to interact (Heart-Kidney non-interaction), emptiness of the mansion of Essence and Blood, and stagnation in the pathways of Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi. Consequently, the mental mechanisms become unresponsive, and spiritual orifices fail to open. Individuals who are advanced in age and physically decrepit are prone to this condition. (Guipi Tang [Restore the Spleen Decoction], Dushu Wan [Reading Pill], Zhuque Wan [Vermilion Bird Pill], Ersen Wan [Two Shen Formulas], Kaixin San [Open the Heart Powder] and similar formulas are appropriate.) There are also cases where Phlegm and Blood stasis accumulate and obstruct the mental mechanisms; such cases should not be judged solely by advanced age. (Shouxing Wan [Longevity Star Pill], Daotan Tang [Guide Out Phlegm Decoction], Dai Didang Wan [Substitute for the Severe Stasis Pill] may be selected.)
Guipi Tang (See Chapter 58)
Dushu Wan
Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, boiled in wine), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, soaked in wine with heart removed, each 1 liang), Digupi (Lycii Cortex, bones removed and washed clean, 2 liang), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each 1 liang).
Grind the above into powder, mix with thin paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 70–80 pills per dose, swallowed with plain warm water before bedtime.
Zhuque Wan (See Chapter 51)
Ersen Wan Treats easy forgetfulness, nourishes the Spirit and stabilizes Will, harmonizes Blood and calms the Mind, and moistens the Couli (skin pores and interstices) externally.
Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, skin removed), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, steamed in wine and mashed), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 1.5 liang), Baifuling (Poria, skin removed), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, each 1 liang), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, soaked in wine with heart removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, rhizome removed, each 0.5 liang).
Grind the above into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar) ground to an extremely fine powder and processed by water flotation (half a liang used for coating). Take 50 pills per dose, increasing up to 100 pills. Swallow on an empty stomach with decoction of Yufeng Tang. (Yufeng Tang is a formula by Zhang Jiegou. It contains thirty-three ingredients, all wind-dispelling herbs, which are too complex to record here. Now, simply swallow with plain warm water.)
Kaixin San Treats propensity to forgetfulness.
Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 liang), Baifuling (Poria, skin removed, 2 liang), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, skin removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, rhizome removed, each 2.5 qian).
Grind the above into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with rice drink after meals.
Shouxing Wan Treats forgetfulness caused by Phlegm stagnation in the meridians. (Formula see Chapter 58)
Daotan Tang (See Chapter 41)
Dai Didang Wan Treats easy forgetfulness due to Blood stasis. (Formula see Chapter 20)
