Generally speaking, when sores and carbuncles first appear, they are as small as millet grains. Their appearance is extremely subtle, and people often overlook them, leading to major disasters. If one can prevent before the manifestation and treat before the formation, discovering in the morning and treating in the evening, there will surely be no danger or distress. Otherwise, pus and blood accumulate, toxins penetrate deeply, leaving one helpless awaiting death, with regret coming too late. With a body of immeasurable value, yet treating it with slowness and negligence, and entrusting one's life to mediocre physicians who handle matters arbitrarily, danger and peril arrive immediately; therefore, physicians must not be chosen lightly. However, one must know that only those who have read extensively through medical classics, are well-versed in disease patterns, thoroughly understand complexion and pulse diagnosis, are proficient in decoctions and medicines, and are ordinarily benevolent, kind, filial, and righteous, remaining unconfused in critical moments, can be considered good physicians capable of saving us. Furthermore, patients must exercise self-restraint, avoiding anger, sorrow, grief, shouting, resentment, arrogance, indulgence in food and drink, and overwork. One should only maintain tranquility and patience. Regarding those around the patient, it is especially important to eliminate noise and clutter. All sounds from striking or touching objects, various unpleasant noises, arguments over right and wrong, cursing and fighting, postpartum women or sexually promiscuous men, unclean bodily odors, fishy and pungent foul smells, chickens, dogs, livestock, and beasts must all be kept away. If relatives and friends come to inquire about the illness, one may pre-instruct them to walk slowly, speak softly and gently, and bow respectfully upon leaving after their visit. Do not allow them to sigh in surprise, talk about old or new matters, make false statements about deficiency or excess, randomly suggest prescriptions, sit for long periods talking much, repeatedly ask questions, which would fatigue and trouble the sick body and confuse and disturb the temperament, causing harm that is far from insignificant. The caregivers should be near middle age in years, with strong benevolent dispositions. When preparing and administering medicines, do not miss the proper timing. In meat, do not eat flesh from wild beasts that died of disease on their own. In aquatic products, do not eat strange-looking mixed fish, nor foods corresponding to the zodiac signs of one's parents or oneself. In vegetables, do not eat out-of-season, nameless, excessively hot, excessively cold, or laxative vegetables. In fruits, do not eat out-of-season, sour and astringent hard-to-digest items, or those infested by insects. Only yellow and white sorghum rice, thin porridge, soft rice, melon, shepherd's purse, radish, ginger sauce, and tender, clean pork and mutton are suitable. Do not let the patient become overly hungry, nor overly full. At this time, one must still avoid all wheat-based pastries, roasted items, fried foods, fatty sweets, and strong flavors. If the skin is about to heal, foul tissue has been completely removed, and the wound is closing, one should still avoid standing up and walking, greeting guests with bows, sexual intercourse, banquets, bathing while angry, climbing heights, traveling, braving cold, or enduring heat. Only when the scar has flattened, spirit returns to normal, and strength is fully restored, are there no further taboos. Within one hundred days, carefully avoid violating these rules. This section applies not only to the care of sores and carbuncles, but also to all chronic conditions involving deficiency and damage; if faithfully observed, it will naturally bring great benefit. Therefore, it is recorded here to be treasured by the world.
