The *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: If an infant dies immediately after birth, examine the mouth for blisters located anterior and superior to the uvula. Use fingernails to puncture the head of the blister, lacerate it to drain the blood, and ensure the blood does not enter the throat.
The *Sanyin Ji Bing Zheng Lei Fang* (Categories and Causes of Diseases) states: If an infant cannot cry immediately after birth, it is necessarily caused by difficult labor and exposure to cold. Quickly wrap the infant in cotton wadding and hold them close to your chest. Do not cut the umbilical cord yet; instead, burn the placenta in a charcoal stove. Then, twist a large paper strip, dip it in oil, ignite it, and smoke the area below the umbilical cord to allow the fire's qi to enter the navel. Subsequently, scald and wash the umbilical cord with hot vinegar water. After a short while, when the infant's breath returns and they begin to cry, bathing may commence. The umbilical cord should be cut only after bathing. Alternatively, if there are blisters on the palate, treat them according to the method described above for infants dying immediately after birth.
When an infant is born with eyes unopened and emitting whimpering sounds, this is due to fetal heat. It is appropriate to administer Tianzhu Huang San (Bambusa Textilis Decoction) and Sheng Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Root Decoction), and have the wet nurse consume them as well. In some cases, improper cleaning leads to foul fluids causing ulceration in the mouth, resulting in redness and erosion that persists for a long time without healing. (It is advisable to wash with Zhenjin San.)
This condition also arises from incomplete oral cleansing, allowing foul pathogens to enter the abdomen, causing abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and an inability to suckle milk. Alternatively, if the mother excessively consumed cold foods, the fetus may have contracted cold in the womb, leading to abdominal pain. (Formulas from the *Waitai Miyao* (Secret Essentials of the Outer Chamber) are suitable; moxibustion at Chengjiang CV24 with seven moxa cones is also beneficial.)
This is mostly caused by the mother indulging in hot-natured foods, allowing heat toxins to transmit to the fetus. If the umbilicus and abdomen become swollen, the surrounding areas turn cyanotic or blackish, and the lips pucker tightly, the condition is incurable. (If these colors are not yet visible, formulas such as Douchi Gao from the *Waitai Miyao* are appropriate.)
This results from heat accumulated in the womb, causing heat stagnation in the anus leading to dryness and constipation. If there is no bowel movement within three days, urgently instruct the wet nurse to rinse her mouth with warm water and then perform "sucking therapy" (acupressure/suction technique) on seven points: the anterior chest, posterior back, below the umbilicus, and the palms and soles of both feet, repeating this four to five times. Additionally, dissolve half a qian of Qingfen (Calomel) with a small amount of honey in warm water, and administer small doses occasionally until defecation occurs. If defecation still does not occur, mechanical intervention is necessary to penetrate and clear the blockage; gold or jade hairpins can be used. They must be inserted one to two cun deep, with a small amount of Suheli Wan (Styrax Pill) placed inside. Relief is achieved upon the passage of stool. If abdominal distension, whimpering, and refusal to suckle persist until the seventh day postpartum, the condition becomes difficult to save. Using a hard green onion stalk to stimulate the anus is also effective.
