White flakes appear on the tongue and inside the mouth of a newborn, resembling the beak of a goose. This is caused by excessive grain qi (nutritive energy from food) during fetal development, leading to heat and fire in the Heart and Spleen steaming outward. Use silk cotton wrapped around a finger, dipped in well water (Jinghua Shui, collected dew or well water), to gently wipe the area. When the infant sleeps, sprinkle calcined Huangdan (Red Lead Powder, processed to remove toxicity) onto the tongue. If the flakes do not detach easily, boil chestnut juice thickly, wrap silk cotton around a finger, dip it in the juice, and wipe. If chestnuts are unavailable, use chestnut tree bark as a substitute.
The symptoms include a stiff tongue, cyanotic lips, puckered mouth, facial muscle spasms, yellowish-red complexion, rapid breathing, hoarseness or inability to speak, and difficulty nursing. If white foam issues from the mouth and the four limbs are cold, the condition is incurable. If there is abdominal distension with visible subcutaneous veins on the abdomen, umbilical torsion, or hernia, and internal qi causes pulling pain, these are all due to stagnation and obstruction in the intestines and stomach. The treatment should focus on dredging and purging; after seven days, the condition may resolve. (Formulas such as Chen Sha Jiang Can San [Cinnabar and Silkworm Powder] are suitable.)
These conditions often arise from careless umbilical cord cutting, allowing wind-cold and dampness pathogens to invade. Entering the navel, they flow into the Heart and Spleen, causing abdominal distension, umbilical swelling, weakness of the four limbs, incessant crying, refusal to nurse, and in severe cases, convulsions. If not cured for a long time, it becomes Umbilical Ulcer (Qi Chuang). If the pathogens enter the meridians, they often transform into Epilepsy (Xian Zheng). If the umbilicus protrudes, the surrounding skin is tight, slightly cyanotic, and the mouth is puckered shut, this indicates Liver Qi excess overcoming Spleen Earth. Treatment should be avoided at this stage. Even if recovery occurs, longevity is unlikely. (Formulas such as Wu Ling San [Five-Ingredient Poria Pill] are suitable.) Another method: For infants within seven days suffering from Umbilical Wind and Puckered Mouth syndrome, survival is rare. Examine the infant's gums for small blisters resembling millet grains. Wrap a finger with cooked cloth, dip in warm water, and gently rupture the blisters to bring relief. Additionally, moxa can be applied to the Ran Gu (KI2) acupoint, located anterior to the medial malleolus in the depression below the large bone. Apply three moxa cones; acupuncture depth should be 0.3 cun, avoiding bleeding. *Lun Xin Jing* treats Umbilical Dampness using dried alum and dragon bone powdered together, with a small amount of musk added, applied to dry the umbilicus. Keep away from wind; applying ash from crimson silk is excellent. Powdered remains of old roof thatch are also beneficial. Qi Umbilicus presents as a swelling the size of a chestnut, soft, swollen, and painful. Apply bamboo sap daily several times until it subsides. Umbilical Ulcer is treated with Long Gu San [Dragon Bone Powder]. Protruding Umbilicus occurs when heat resides in the chest, causing frequent stretching and drawing of qi, producing hiccup-like sounds. Straining forces the qi into the root, causing protrusion, which appears dangerously large and empty. Do not apply external medicines, as this may cause harm. (Boiling Bai Shao Yao Tang [White Peony Decoction] with Yi Yi Ren [Coix Seed] and taking it warm on an empty stomach is suitable, along with external application of dispersing ointment to naturally flatten the condition.)
