Hua (Slippery) pulse indicates excessive phlegm, Xian (Wiry) pulse indicates retained fluid. Heat presents with Hua Shu (Slippery-Rapid) pulse, Cold presents with Xian Jin (Wiry-Tight) pulse.
Fu (Floating) combined with Hua indicates Wind; Chen (Sinking) combined with Hua indicates Qi stagnation. Food injury presents with Duan (Short) and Ji (Rapid) pulses; Dampness retention presents with Ru (Soggy) and Xi (Fine) pulses.
Hua is the image of both water-fluids and tangible phlegm. It indicates excessive phlegm because phlegm is formed by the coagulation of fluids. Xian pulse is straight and constricting, lacking the ability to rise and fall or surge freely; this indicates weak Yang movement power, thus fluids remain. (Suitable formulas include Heji Beishu Wan [Formula of the Imperial Pharmacy with Doubled Atractylodes] and Linggui Zhugan Tang [Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes Macrocephala, and Licorice Decoction].) Compared to phlegm, fluids have not yet fully coagulated, so the Xian pulse does not resemble the continuous, bead-like rolling sensation of the Hua pulse. Generally, Qi mechanism surging belongs to Heat, evidenced by Hua Shu pulse. Constriction and binding belong to Cold, evidenced by Xian Jin pulse. Surging and floating represent the image of Wind, so Fu Hua pulse indicates concurrent Wind. (Suitable formulas include Qingzhou Baiwanzi [Qingzhou White Pills], Fazhi Banxia [Processed Pinellia], Qingxin Niuhuang Wan [Clear Heart Calves' Gallstone Pills], Chenxiang Tuotan Wan [Agarwood Phlegm-Expelling Pills], and Qingqi Huatan Wan [Clear Qi and Resolve Phlegm Pills].) Rapid movement sinking down indicates Qi depression, so Dong Hua pulse indicates concurrent Qi stagnation. Food stagnating in the middle jiao obstructs Qi, preventing its penetration and distribution, causing the pulse to become Short. A Short pulse means Qi is constrained internally, potentially leading to disease. The Duan Ji (Short-Rapid) pulse is similar to Hua, so Hua pulse also governs food stagnation. (Suitable formula includes Danxi Baohe Wan [Danxi Harmonizing the Middle Pills].) Dampness is a Yin pathogen; its retention causes slow, seeping pulses, unlike Yang pathogens which change rapidly, hence the pulse is Ru Xi (Soggy-Fine). (Suitable formula includes Zhongjing Zexie Tang [Alisma Decoction].)
