When a newborn infant is about to be bathed but the water is not yet ready, wrap the infant in cotton wadding and hold them in an adult's arms to keep warm. After bathing, this should also be done; even in midsummer, do not remove the cotton wadding abruptly, but gradually reduce it. Since the infant has just left the mother's womb, exposure to cold air must be avoided. Boil water in advance and store it in a bottle; when needed, warm it gradually without using raw water. This prevents the infant from developing sores, and maintaining this practice for one month is ideal.
If a newborn has weak breath and cannot cry, it is likely due to difficult labor or exposure to cold. Immediately wrap the infant in cotton wadding and hold them in your arms. Do not cut the umbilical cord yet. Place the placenta in a charcoal stove to burn it. Then, light a large paper lamp dipped in oil and pass it repeatedly along the umbilical cord to cauterize it. Because the umbilical cord connects to the infant's navel, the heat energy enters the abdomen through the navel. Subsequently, wash and rub the umbilical cord with hot vinegar water. After a moment, when breathing returns and the infant cries normally as usual, they may be bathed. Only after bathing should the umbilical cord be cut.
Immediately after birth, use cotton-wrapped fingers to wipe all the foul blood from the infant's mouth. If not wiped promptly, once the infant cries, the blood will enter the abdomen and cause various diseases. Do not feed milk immediately. Instead, first give a small amount of thick decoction of *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian, 黄连) that has been soaked and crushed, mixed with fine powder of Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂), and applied to the infant's mouth. Once the old meconium in the abdomen is completely expelled, then feeding can begin. If the infant sleeps much, let them sleep; do not force-feed. This way, the infant will naturally grow strong and suffer fewer illnesses.
If a newborn experiences urinary and fecal retention with severe abdominal distension, immediately have a woman rinse her mouth with warm water and suckle seven points on the infant: the anterior chest, posterior back, below the navel, and the palms and soles of the hands and feet. Suckle each point three to five times until the skin turns red. The blockage will resolve shortly; otherwise, there is no hope of survival. Encountering this symptom and applying this method can be considered a rebirth for the infant.
There are four types of night crying in infants: Cold, Heat, Double Tongue and Mouth Ulcers, and Guest Qi Intrusion. In the Cold pattern, the infant cries due to abdominal pain, with a cyanotic and pale face, cold breath, and a cold abdomen, often crying with a curved waist; this is a cold syndrome. In the Heat pattern, the infant cries with heart restlessness, a red face, dark urine, hot breath, and a warm abdomen, sometimes sweating while crying and arching their back; this is a heat syndrome. For Double Tongue or Mouth Ulcers, the infant wants to nurse but cries upon touching the nipple, with slight fever on the body and forehead. Quickly check the mouth with a lamp; if there are no ulcers, the tongue must be swollen. Guest Qi Intrusion refers to crying caused by being startled or offended by strangers.
Infants injured by milk or food may experience intermittent fever that subsides temporarily. After the fever subsides, only the abdomen remains hot, or fever occurs at night; this indicates injury from milk and food. The stool has a sour and foul odor. For abnormal cases, the primary treatment formula is Qianjin Zi Wan (Golden Age Purple Pill).
