The carbuncle and toxic swelling occurring between the anus and the external genitalia is named Xuan Yong (Hanging Carbuncle). It is rarely recorded in medical books, and few people in the world know of it. At the initial onset, there is only a sensation of intense itching; the nodule is initially as large as a pine nut, gradually enlarging to the size of a lotus seed. After more than forty days, it becomes red and swollen like a walnut. Once it ruptures, both urination and defecation will occur from this opening, making it incurable. The medicinal material used is large licorice root with transverse striations, one tael, cut into segments approximately three cun long. One bowl of clear water from a mountain stream flowing eastward is taken (well water or river water must not be used). The licorice is dipped in water and slowly decocted alternating between mild and strong heat; impatience must be avoided. It must be boiled for three shichen (six hours) until the water is completely evaporated. The licorice is broken open to check if the center is moist and thoroughly penetrated, which indicates it is properly prepared. Then, two bowls of unadulterated wine are added, and it is boiled again until half remains. This constitutes one dose, taken warm. Initially, there may be no obvious effect; it takes about twenty days for the swelling to subside. If it has not ruptured, it will not rupture, ensuring safety; additional doses are harmless. Yao Kangchao, the prefect of Xinghua, suffered from this carbuncle. While many physicians held their hands in helplessness, he recovered after taking two doses.
Wu Da had previously used mud to repair the temple of the God of Goodness. Later, while constructing a house, he fell from a ladder and severely injured his waist. He dreamed that the deity came to him and said, "You once saved me in the past; I dare not forget." Thus, he was instructed to use the formula for Rushang Yin (Frankincense Decoction). The formula uses seven ingredients: tiger bone soaked in wine, tortoise shell (from a dead turtle), Achyranthes Root (Niuxi, 牛膝), Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome (Bixie, 萆薢), Dipsacus Root (Xuduan, 续断), and Frankincense (Ruxiang, 乳香). Upon waking, he could remember the prescription and immediately ordered his son to purchase the herbs and respectfully take them. He recovered in ten days (Recorded in 'Ji Zhi').
At that time, Kang Zu served as the magistrate of Guangde and showed great reverence for Zhang Wang, with his entire family abstaining from eating pork. Subsequently, he suffered from an ailment in the lower body. After slight improvement, a carbuncle reappeared on the left breast, followed by the formation of nodules in the chest and epigastrium region, as large as fists and hard as stones. Half a year passed, and various medicines proved ineffective. Soon, the pain radiated from the arm and axilla to the shoulder, causing extreme suffering. He urgently prayed at the shrine of Zhang Wang. In the dream, he heard a voice say, "If you wish for peace, simply use fresh ginger juice to process Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附) and take it." Upon waking, he called his son to consult the Materia Medica and found that the therapeutic indications for these two substances matched. He consulted the physician Zhang Di, who also agreed it was reasonable. Thus, Cyperi Rhizoma was de-haired, soaked overnight in fresh ginger juice, ground into powder, and two qian were taken each time, mixed with rice water. After only a few doses, pus drained from the sore, and the swelling and induration gradually subsided, leading to recovery (Recorded in 'Geng Zhi').
In the spring of Jingkang Year 2, a severe epidemic broke out in the capital city. A mysterious person wrote a prescription on the wall of a rest house. Anyone suffering from swelling due to the epidemic took it without exception, achieving efficacy. The formula consists of: black beans, two he, stir-fried until fragrant and cooked; licorice root, two cun, honey-fried until yellow. Decoct in two zhan of water until reduced to half. Sip frequently in small amounts (Ibid.).
