When Yin qi is in excess, one dreams of wading through large waters and feeling fear; when Yang qi is in excess, one dreams of large fires burning and scorching; when both Yin and Yang qi are in excess, one dreams of killing and injuring each other. When pathogenic factors are excessive in the upper body, one dreams of flying; when they are excessive in the lower body, one dreams of falling. After being full, one dreams of giving things to others; after being hungry, one dreams of taking things from others. When Liver qi is in excess, one dreams of anger; when Lung qi is in excess, one dreams of crying.
Why do elderly people lie down but fail to fall asleep, while young people sleep soundly without waking? Young people have abundant Blood and Qi, smooth muscles, unobstructed airways, and normal circulation of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi; therefore, they are energetic during the day and sleep peacefully at night. Elderly people have declining Blood and Qi, non-smooth muscles, and sluggish pathways of Ying and Wei Qi; therefore, they lack mental clarity during the day and cannot sleep well at night.
A male patient urinated dozens of times a day, with urine resembling turbid rice water and appearing white. He suffered from absent-mindedness, emaciation, and reduced appetite due to sexual exhaustion. He was cured before finishing the course of Sangpiaoxiao San (Ootheca Mantidis Powder). This formula calms the Spirit, stabilizes the Heart will, treats forgetfulness, reduces urinary frequency, and tonifies Heart Qi. The ingredients include: Sangpiaoxiao (Ootheca Mantidis), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Longgu (Draconis Os), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fushen (Poria cum Radice), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Guijia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-processed). Each ingredient weighs one liang. Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose, mixed with Renshen decoction before bed. (From *Bencao Yan Yi*)
For those suffering from nightmares (Ye Yan), quickly take dust from the roof beam and put it into the nostrils to awaken them. It is advised not to shine a light on them. (From *Suosui Lu*)
Daolin said: Before sleeping at night, often stroke the heart area with your hand and chant the mantra: "Tianling Jierong, may I attain longevity; Wuzang Junhou, may peace prevail." Men should recite it seven times, women fourteen times, to achieve longevity and freedom from disease. (From *Xiuzhen Mijue*)
In a mountain temple in Yanzhou, there was a wandering monk who was emaciated and ate very little. Every night upon lying down, he sweated profusely all over his body, soaking his clothes by morning. This persisted for twenty years, rendering him untreatable, awaiting only death. The monastery's supervisor monk said, "I have a highly effective medicine to cure you." After three days, his chronic illness was instantly resolved. The prescription was then revealed to be using only Mulberry Leaf (Sangye, Mori Folium). Pick the leaves while covered with dew, hang them to dry and roast, grind into powder. Take two qian on an empty stomach, mixed with warm rice drink. Dried fallen leaves can also be used, though their efficacy is inferior to fresh ones. According to *Bencao*, Mulberry Leaf is recorded as treating hyperhidrosis, which confirms this theory. (From *Xin Zhi*)
Xu Shuwei stated in *Benshi Fang*: A soldier in the army committed an offense and was about to be executed when he was pardoned. His Spirit was lost, and he appeared like a fool. I gave him one pill of Jingqi Wan (Fright Qi Pill). After taking it, he fell asleep, and upon waking, the illness had vanished. The wife of Commander Zhang in Jiangdong had suffered from Heart-loss syndrome for several years due to fleeing bandits. I prescribed this formula to her, and she recovered immediately. Also, the wife of Inspector Wo in Huangshan suffered from manic convulsions for over a year, and more than ten physicians failed to treat her effectively. I prescribed this formula to her, removing Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and adding Tie Fen (Ferrum, Iron Powder). She recovered before finishing the dose. Iron Powder not only resolves phlegm and calms the Heart but is particularly effective in suppressing Liver pathogenic factors. If frequent anger causes severe Liver pathogenic factors, Iron Powder can subdue them. *Suwen* states that Yang Jue (Yang Convulsion) with mania and anger is treated with Ti Luo (Iron Filings), which embodies the principle of restraining Metal to control Wood.
