The son of King Qi, those young children fell ill. He summoned Chen Yi (Chunyu Yi) to palpate their pulses and informed him: This is Qi Ge disease (Qi Obstruction Disease). This disease causes restlessness and fullness, inability to eat, and frequent vomiting of saliva. It arises from sorrow in youth.
Regarding diet, I immediately prepared for him Xiaqi Tang (Descending Qi Decoction) and had him drink it. After one day, the qi descended; after two days, he could eat; after three days, the illness was cured. The reason I knew it was this child's illness was that upon palpation, the heart qi was turbid and restless, with meridians disrupted. This is a disease of the yang aspect of the collaterals. Pulse methodology states: When the pulse comes rapid and hurried but departs with difficulty and lacks unity, the disease resides in the heart. General body heat and a flourishing pulse indicate Double Yang (Chong Yang). Double Yang disturbs the Heart Master, hence restlessness and inability to eat. If the collateral vessels have excess, blood will flow upward; if blood flows upward excessively, death ensues. This disease is born from the sorrowful heart, caused by worry. (From *Records of the Grand Historian*)
Ancient and modern discussions on Ge Qi (Obstruction Qi) identify five types: You Ge (Sorrow Obstruction), Hui Ge (Anger Obstruction), Qi Ge (Qi Obstruction), Han Ge (Cold Obstruction), and Re Ge (Heat Obstruction). You Ge (Sorrow Obstruction) is characterized by knotting of qi in the chest, restlessness, inability to eat, emaciation, and weakness. Hui Ge (Anger Obstruction) is characterized by fullness and hardness below the heart, indigestion, belching with acid reflux, and difficulty in urination and defecation. Qi Ge (Qi Obstruction) is characterized by rebellious fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, blockage of the throat, and belching upon smelling food. Han Ge (Cold Obstruction) is characterized abdominal distension and fullness, coughing and reverse qi, borborygmus, and food failing to nourish muscles. Re Ge (Heat Obstruction) is characterized by heat in the five centers, sores on the mouth and tongue, bone irritability, heavy body, dry lips and mouth, back pain, and Xiong Bi (Chest Bi Syndrome).
This disease is neither external nor internal, neither cold nor hot, neither excess nor deficiency; therefore, medicinal drugs are difficult to achieve efficacy. This disease originates from worry, thought, anger, and resentment disturbing the qi and damaging the spirit. Qi accumulates internally; when qi moves, all symptoms appear; when qi is still, the disease manifestations subside slightly. Palpating it reveals no location of the disease; observing it reveals no cause of the complexion; listening to it reveals no source of the voice. Thus, acupuncture and medication both fail to be effective. This is a disease within the realm of spirit and intention. Recently, a scholar's family in the capital presented with these symptoms. They were advised to maintain inner purity and observe externally, entrusting all mentally taxing matters to others. Only then did medication take effect. Without doing so, peace would likely never be attained. By adhering to this precept, combined with moxibustion on the Gaohuang acupoint and Sihua acupoints, and taking these three medicines, recovery can be assured. Sun Simiao said: Women have more desires than men, and contract diseases twice as often as men. Furthermore, due to maternal love, love and hate, jealousy, worry, and resentment, which adhere firmly and cannot be controlled by emotion, the disease roots become deep and difficult to cure.
