The Military Supervisor of the Prefecture suffered from illness due to excessive grief and longing. Hao Yun told his son, "The treatment should involve making him extremely frightened; then the illness will be cured." At that time, Li Songqing, the Vice Prefect, enforced the law very strictly, which was what the Supervisor feared most in his heart. Hao Yun, together with the Supervisor's son, requested Li Songqing to reprimand the Supervisor for his faults. The Supervisor became terrified and broke into a cold sweat, and the illness subsided (from *Shao Shi Wen Jian Lu*).
Yao Cheng, Palace Attendant-in-Ordinary, suffered from severe pain in his lower back and spine, unable to bend forward or extend backward. Hao Yun said, "This is an issue of the Governing Vessel (Du Mai). It should be treated by inducing anger. The limbs are affected, and the pathogen transmits to the large and small collaterals causing pain. There is no structural damage; therefore, medication is not indicated. Using drugs to attack it will only increase the pain. It will take one year to regain the ability to bend and extend, two years to sit, and three years to fully recover." Three years later, he indeed recovered (same source).
The son of the Wang family in Si Village was born seven days ago when his testicles retracted. A physician prescribed grinding sulfur and Cornus officinalis fruit (Shanzhuyu) with garlic to apply to the abdomen, and fumigating with Artemisia argyi (Ai Ye) and Cnidium monnieri (Chuanshuizi), after which he recovered. This was likely caused by cold pathogen invasion at birth (from *Suo Cui Lu*).
A eunuch returned from a mission to Jiaozhou and Guangzhou. Zhou Gu remarked to him, "There is a dragon-jiao inside this person's abdomen." The Emperor asked the eunuch in surprise, "Do you have an illness?" The eunuch replied, "When I was riding a horse over Dayu Ridge, it was extremely hot. Exhausted and thirsty, I drank water and felt a hard, palpable mass in my abdomen like a stone." Zhou Gu prepared a decoction of Natrii Sulfas (Xiaoshi) and Realgar (Xionghuang) for him to drink. He immediately vomited up an object, several inches long and as thick as a finger. It had scales and armor. When thrown into water, it grew to several feet in length within moments. Pouring vinegar on it restored its original state. Covering it with a vessel, by the next day at Si hour (9-11 AM), it had transformed into a dragon. The Emperor was greatly astonished (from *Ming Huang Za Lu*).
Zhang Chengzhong, a man from Hanzhong, had a daughter of seven or eight years old. While using her mother's gold hairpin to clean her teeth, she accidentally swallowed it. She suffered unbearable pain in her chest and diaphragm, filled with worry and panic. Suddenly, a silversmith came to see me, saying he had medicine to treat this. I went home to retrieve the medicine, administered three qian mixed with rice water. The next morning, it was passed in the stool. Upon inquiry, it turned out to be powdered calcined sheep tibia bone (Yangjing Tan). (*Famous Doctors' Records* notes: Yangjing Tan also effectively treats accidental swallowing of coins.)
Flying silk entering the eye causes the eyeball to swell, the sclera to protrude, and unbearable pain. Immediately use two or three new brush pens, dip them in good ink, and move the brush over the eyeball. The flying silk will wrap around the brush and come out, bringing immediate relief.
In Linchuan, there was a man whose profession was performing snake tricks and selling medicine. One day, while performing, he was bitten by a viper and died instantly. The bitten arm swelled to the size of a thigh. Soon, his whole body swelled with skin turning yellowish-black, and he died. A Daoist priest watching nearby spoke up, "This man is dead. I have a medicine that can cure him, but I fear the toxin has penetrated too deeply, and it might be incurable. If you gentlemen can witness this, I dare to exert effort." Everyone eagerly encouraged him. He asked for twenty wen coins and went away. In just the time it takes to eat a meal, he ran back, ordered fresh water to be drawn, unwrapped the medicine, mixed one sheng of the herbal powder, pried open the victim's mouth with a stick, and poured it in. After the medicine was consumed, gurgling was heard in the navel, and foul-smelling yellow fluid flowed from the mouth, spreading over the body. The swelling receded upon touch. After a long while, he returned to normal. The man could stand up and was indistinguishable from before the injury. He bowed to the spectators and thanked the Daoist priest solemnly. The Daoist said, "This medicine is not hard to obtain nor difficult to prepare. I do not hesitate to teach it to everyone." It was simply Angelica dahurica (Baizhi). The proper method is to take it with Ophiopogon japonicus Decoction (Maidong Tang), but due to the urgency, water was used instead. "I have saved one person; now I must go." He brushed off his sleeves and left. Guo Shizhou obtained this prescription. Once, a soldier from Poyang who was on night duty in a watchtower was bitten by a snake. His abdomen was red and swollen, threatening to burst by dawn. He drank this medicine and recovered immediately (from *Yi Jian Zhi*).
