Jiao, Yu, and Lu were all skilled physicians of the Zhou Dynasty (from *Liezi* and *Chuxueji*).
Bian Que was a native of Zheng County in Bohai Commandery (Xu Guang noted that "Zheng" should be "Mao," which is a county name now belonging to Hejian Commandery). His surname was Qin and his given name was Yueren. To this day, those who discuss pulse diagnosis under heaven refer to him as Bian Que (from *Shiji*).
Zi Bao was a disciple of Bian Que. At that time, the Crown Prince had died. Bian Que then instructed his disciple Zi Yang to use sharpened needles and stone bi for acupuncture at the Sanyang Wuhui acupoints. After a short while, the Crown Prince regained consciousness. Bian Que then instructed Zi Bao to prepare the Wufen Wei (Five-Part Moxibustion/Warming) and Bajian Ji (Eight-Reduction Decoction), boil them, and apply the hot compress to both sides of the Crown Prince's hypochondrium. The Crown Prince was thus able to sit up (from *Shiji*).
Li Xi, serving as the Imperial Physician-in-Chief of Qin, knowing that his medical skills were inferior to Bian Que's, secretly sent someone to assassinate him (from *Shiji*).
Cui Wenzi was a native of Tai Mountain during the Qin Dynasty. He cherished the teachings of Huang-Lao and resided at the foot of Qianshan. Later, he produced Huang San (Yellow Powder) and Chi Wan (Red Pills) and sold them in the city markets, claiming to be over three hundred years old. Subsequently, an epidemic broke out, causing tens of thousands of deaths. The Longshi requested Cui Wenzi to save the people. Cui Wenzi carried a red banner, wore Huang San, and patrolled among the populace, administering the powder and pills, resulting in immediate recovery. Those saved numbered in the tens of thousands. Later, he departed for Shu to sell medicine; thus, people say that Cui Wenzi's Red Pills and Yellow Powder are nearly miraculous (from *Liexian Zhuan*).
Mr. Anqi was a native of Langya Township who sold medicine by the sea and was called the "Thousand-Year-Old Duke" by contemporaries. Li Shaojun, while gathering herbs on Mount Tai, fell critically ill and was near death when he encountered Mr. Anqi. Mr. Anqi gave him Shenlou San (Divine Pavilion Powder); after taking one qianbi dose, he recovered. Upon hearing of this, the First Emperor summoned him, conversed with him for three days and nights, and bestowed gold and jade worth tens of millions. These treasures came from Fuxiang Pavilion, which Mr. Anqi left behind before departing (from *Liexian Zhuan*).
Lou Hu of the Han Dynasty, courtesy name Junqing, was a native of Qi. His father was a physician. In his youth, Lou Hu memorized ten thousand chapters of classical prescriptions, materia medica, and secret formulas. Elders revered him, saying to him collectively, "Given your talent, why not seek official office through study?" Consequently, Lou Hu bid farewell to his father to study the classics, later serving as Prefect of Jingzhao, where he gained great fame and integrity (from *Hanshu*).
Gongsun Guang was a native of Tangli, Zichuan, Qi. He was fond of medical arts and highly regarded by his contemporaries. Initially, Chunyu Yi studied at Gongsun Guang's home. Gongsun Guang taught him all the wonderful prescriptions he possessed. Chunyu Yi thought to himself that he had nothing to offer in return, thinking, "It is truly fortunate to obtain forbidden prescriptions; I dare not pass them on recklessly after death." Gongsun Guang said, "You will surely become a state duke in the future. My methods are exhausted. Yang Qing of Linzi possesses prescriptions that are extremely extraordinary; I am inferior to him. You should respectfully serve him and you will surely obtain his prescriptions." Chunyu Yi then bid farewell to Gongsun Guang and went to serve Yang Qing (from *Shiji*).
