Yang Du Shengma Decoction (Corydalis Rhizoma and Cinnamon Twig Decoction for Yang Toxin)
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, half tael), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli), Xionghuang (Realgar), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, each one tael). Take five qian per dose.
Use one and a half zhong of water, decoct to obtain one zhong, take warm. Cover hands and feet to induce sweating. Vomiting is also beneficial.
Yin Du Gancao Decoction (Licorice Decoction for Yin Toxin)
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, each half tael), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanjiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, each one tael). Take five qian per dose. Use one zhong and a half of water, decoct to obtain one zhong, take.
These two formulas are distinct from those for Yang Toxin and Yin Toxin in the Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage). Therefore, they are recorded here. This refers to contracting the abnormal qi of epidemic pestilence from heaven and earth, which spreads contagiously within families. This is what is referred to as "Shiyi Zheng" (Seasonal Epidemic Syndrome).
Ancient Formula Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder)
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Bohe (Herba Menthae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Fushen (Sclerotium Poria cum Radix Pini). For modified versions, add Danpi (Cortex Moutan) and Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae). I use Shanzhi because it descends curving downwards to drain dampness; instead, I use Zhuyu (Fructus Corni) stir-fried with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis).
Mahuang Guizhi Tang (Ephedra and Cinnamon Twig Decoction)
Renshen (Radix Ginseng, to tonify deficiency of Yuan Qi in the Upper Jiao and solidify the exterior), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, each three fen to protect Lung Qi), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, acrid and sweet to disperse cold pathogenic factors), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, each five fen to harmonize and nourish blood), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, root tips and foam removed, primarily to disperse cold pathogenic factors), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, sweet in flavor to disperse cold pathogenic factors), Huangqi (Radix Astragali, to solidify the exterior and benefit Wei Qi), Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, each one qian above), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, five fruits to calm the pulse qi). Use three zhan of water. First decoct Mahuang alone until boiling, remove the foam. Reduce to two zhan. Add remaining herbs and decoct together to obtain one zhan. Remove dregs and take hot. One dose is sufficient for cure, and it will not recur.
Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia)
Treats Mingmen Fire Decline (Decline of Vital Gate Fire), inability to generate Earth (Spleen/Stomach), resulting in Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold, lack of appetite, loose stools, or decline of the Lower Origin, pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, frequent urination at night, etc.
Shudihuang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, eight taels, washed clean with genuine raw Huaiqing wine, soaked overnight, steamed for half a day in a willow wood steamer over a clay pot, sun-dried, then steamed and dried again, repeated nine times as the standard. Before use, pound into paste), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae, four taels), Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni, four taels), Danpi (Cortex Moutan, three taels), BaiFuling (Poria, three taels), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis, three taels), Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi, one tael), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, one tael).
Method for processing Fuzi: Select Fuzi weighing one tael and three or four qian, with lotus petal patterns, round head and flat base being best. Prepare five or six bowls of Tongbian (Child's Urine). Soak for five to seven days until thoroughly moistened. Peel off the skin and cut into four pieces. Continue soaking for three to four days. Wrap in several layers of coarse paper, soak wet, and roast in embers. Take out, slice, and check for white spots. If present, heat again on a new tile until no spots remain. If urgent, cut into large slices, boil in Tongbian for three or four boils, and roast熟 on a hot tile.
Bawei Wan was formulated by Zhang Zhongjing. The Shenghui Fang states that it can subdue Kidney pathogens and serves as a sovereign drug. It should be used with modifications. Modifications not based on Li Dongyuan's principles are ineffective. Some people today add Renshen, but Renshen is a Spleen Meridian herb and does not reach the Kidney Meridian. Some add Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae); some wish to reduce Zexie. All these fail to understand the original intent of the formula.
Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) plus Wuweizi is called Duqi Wan, reflecting the meaning of "describing categories and resembling forms."
Qian Yi reduced Guizhi and Fuzi, naming it Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia), used for children because children are purely Yang, hence Guizhi and Fuzi are reduced.
Yang Shi stated that for regular consumption, remove Fuzi and add Wuweizi, named Jiabian Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill).
Danxi has Sanyi Shenqi Wan, but this specific formula should not be used.
Zhongjing has Jingui Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill from the Golden Cabinet).
Yiyin Dihuang Wan treats eye diseases caused by Fire Decline; Jiyin Dihuang Wan treats eye diseases with Fire. Both formulas are found in Yuanji Qiuwei.
Li Dongyuan said that Bawei Wan treats a pulse that is exhausted and deficient; it is a remedy for the Northwest regions. When Metal is weak and Wood prevails, Water is scarce and Fire is deficient, or when the pulse is bounding and forceful upon pressure, taking it is also effective. Why? The answer is: all tight pulses indicate Cold, which implies Fire Deficiency, internal deficiency with scant Water, and Wood prevailing over weak Metal. Therefore, taking it is also effective.
