This work consists of notes taken at various times during my daily reading of medical books, which accumulated over the years into a manuscript. It has since been re-edited, revised, and arranged in order. The first section traces the origins in two volumes; followed by Treatise on Cold Damage (Shanghan) in two volumes; then Miscellaneous Diseases (Zazheng) in eight volumes; followed by Gynecology (Nüke) in one volume, Pediatrics (Youke) in one volume, Smallpox and Measles (Douzhen) in one volume, and Formulas and Medicinals (Fangyao) in one volume. In total, there are sixteen volumes. Since the book is divided into various categories with distinct classifications, the format cannot be uniform; I hope readers will understand this.
Regarding quotations from classical texts, they are respectfully recorded at the beginning of the relevant sections to demonstrate reverence for the classics. For maxims and aphorisms of ancient sages, the arrangement follows either the continuity of meaning or the progression of symptoms, rather than chronological order. However, in the supplementary compilation of sage quotes under each category of miscellaneous diseases, the words of Zhang Zhongjing are listed first because he is revered as the Sage of Medicine (Yi Sheng).
The modern works compiled herein include those with pure and refined discussions, excellent treatment methods, clear and apt analogies, or well-structured refutations. Any content that is superficial or mediocre has been discarded.
The collected statements aim only for relevance and conciseness. Therefore, sometimes only a few lines are excerpted, sometimes a few sentences are picked out, or merely a few characters are gathered; all serve the purpose of removing complexity and retaining simplicity.
For the various masters' works cited, the book titles and authors' names are clearly stated under each item. Occasionally, the same author's name or book title may appear multiple times throughout the text; sometimes only the book title or only the name is recorded; and in some cases, both are omitted. Learned scholars will naturally be able to identify these.
Gynecology and pediatrics involve conditions such as menstrual disorders, leukorrhea, pregnancy, childbirth, convulsions, infant malnutrition (Gan syndrome), smallpox, and measles. Consequently, treating women and children is significantly more difficult than treating men. Examining ancient and modern medical texts, only the medical cases of Xue Lizhai and Wang Sun'an's *Shengzhun* are particularly detailed. However, due to their extensive length, they are not easy to read. This book extracts only the main outlines; for a comprehensive understanding, one should refer to the original works of these two masters.
Completed formulas used for treating cold damage and miscellaneous diseases from various medical texts are summarized at the end of each chapter for reference. Ancient formulas are numerous, and their general content can already be found in books such as *Yifang Kao*, *Mingyi Fanglun*, and *Yifang Jijie*. This book compiles an additional volume of formula theories, summarizing the essentials. Formulas demonstrating unique ingenuity or derived from reliable reports with excellent therapeutic effects are occasionally appended to relevant chapters. Formulas for pediatric pills and powders are included in greater numbers to prepare for emergencies. Regarding treatments for smallpox and measles, space in this volume was insufficient, so they were not included; specialized texts are available for consultation.
Regarding materia medica, among famous scholarly works: the most comprehensive is Li Shizhen's *Bencao Gangmu*; the most concise is [Miao] Yi's *Bencao Beiyao*. The *Yaolue* (Brief Outline of Medicinals) compiled in this book is admittedly too brief, constrained by limited space, thus covering only the essentials.
Medical cases are like chess manuals. However, finding exquisite examples within a single practitioner's collection is rare. Even the *Mingyi Leian* (Collected Cases of Famous Physicians) is not incomplete, but it may be too broad and lack focus. The cases selected here strive to surpass the ordinary, aiming to broaden the reader's perspective. Ordinary cases are excluded.
Works from the Classics, Histories, Philosophers, and Collections that intersect with medicine are occasionally cited. This is not done to display erudition, but because medicine concerns life and death, a matter attended to even by ancient sages. It should not be dismissed as a trivial pursuit.
Books such as *Zhangshi Yitong*, *Zhengzhi Huibu*, and *Shenshi Zunsheng* also select famous theories from various sources but often interweave personal opinions. This book exclusively presents the words of ancients, daring not to insert my own humble views, lest I incur the fault of presumptuous fabrication.
