Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction), Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Tonifying Decoction); for cases presenting with cold pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, weakness in the feet and knees, dizziness, and expectoration of phlegm, use Bawei Wan (Eight Flavor Pill). (Xue Lizhai)
He Xi Feng (Crane's Knee Wind) refers to Bi syndrome (obstruction syndrome) caused by wind-cold pathogenic factors obstructing the knee joint. The knee bones gradually enlarge, while the muscles above and below the knees gradually become emaciated and thin. At this stage, direct treatment of the knee is not advisable; instead, one should first nourish the patient's Qi and Blood, allowing the muscles to gradually regain their luster and vitality, before proceeding to treat the knee. This approach is largely similar to the treatment of Pian Ku (hemiplegia). Since hemiplegia has occurred, it is urgent to irrigate and nourish the parts that have not yet atrophied, so that the atrophied parts may regain smooth flow and vitality. If one does not understand the methods of guiding Blood via Qi and guiding Qi via Blood, but merely uses standard anti-wind formulas, few will avoid rapid death due to total emaciation. Ancient formulas for treating pediatric He Xi Feng used Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) supplemented with Lu Rong (Deer Antler Velvet) and Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root). The intention of not directly treating the wind pathogen was most profound. (Yu Jiayan)
