甚至色带紫黑;又有因月分未足,生育太早,遍体浸渍,红嫩而光。二证俱属恶候。遗毒者,内服换肌消毒散;

Dream Birth
When a newborn cannot make a sound after birth, it is called "Dream Birth" (Meng Sheng). People often do not know how to rescue them, which is deeply pitiable! Do not cut the umbilical cord. Burn the placenta with fire to allow warm air to enter the infant's abdomen. Then, wash the umbilical cord with hot water. Take one cat, wrap its head and feet in a cloth bag, hold the cat's head, and bring it near the infant's ear. Bite the cat's ear so that the cat cries once; the infant will then wake up and make a sound. ○ In cases where the infant cannot cry due to difficult labor or exposure to wind-cold at birth, causing the vital energy to be on the verge of extinction, use the above method. Additionally, have the parents blow breath into the infant's mouth to reconnect the qi. (Chen Feixia)
Non-Crying
If a newborn has no breath and cannot cry, it must be caused by difficult labor or exposure to cold. Immediately wrap the infant in cotton wool and hold them close to the chest. Do not cut the umbilical cord immediately. Burn the placenta in a stove. Take a large paper strip, dip it in oil, light it, and smoke the area below the umbilical cord. Since the umbilical cord connects to the infant, the fire's qi enters the abdomen through the navel during smoking. Then, rinse the umbilical cord with hot vinegar water. After a moment, when the qi returns and crying begins, the umbilical cord can be cut. ○ If an infant does not cry, does not swallow milk, and appears lifeless, quickly check the throat. If there are small blisters on the uvula or hard palate, puncture them with a fingernail, wipe away the bad blood with a cloth, and the infant will be able to vocalize and swallow milk. (*San Yin Fang*)
Failure to Suckle
"Failure to suckle" refers to the inability to suck milk immediately after birth. There are two causes, which must be distinguished: If the infant has not passed meconium, leading to abdominal distension, shortness of breath, vomiting, and refusal to suckle, treat with *Yinian Jin* (One-Pinch Gold Decoction). If the cause is the mother consuming too much cold-cooling food, affecting the fetal qi, the infant will likely suffer from abdominal pain, excessive crying, and a cyan-white complexion; treat primarily with *Yunqi San* (Harmonizing Qi Powder). If there is cold reversal of the four limbs, treat with *Lizhong Tang* (Regulate the Middle Decoction). (*Yizong Jinjian*)
Eyes Not Opening
If an infant is born with eyes closed and groaning, it is caused by heat received during conception. Use *Tianzhu Huang San* (Calamine Powder) and have the mother consume it. Also, wash the eyes with decoction from a bamboo tube. Alternatively, wash the eyes with water dissolved with bear bile, seven times a day. (*Zhengzhi Zhunsheng*)
No Urination
If an infant does not urinate after birth, it is because the mother indulged in dieting during pregnancy, allowing heat-toxin qi to flow into the fetus. Consequently, the infant is born with swelling around the navel and abdomen and cannot urinate. If there is cyan-black discoloration around the navel and the mouth is puckered, it is incurable. If there is no cyan-black discoloration but the infant refuses milk, administer *Congru Tang* (Scallion and Milk Decoction) and apply *Douchi Gao* (Fermented Soybean Paste). (*Zhengzhi Zhunsheng*)
No Defecation
Commonly known as "Locked Belly" (Suo Du). It is caused by heat in the womb, where excess heat-toxin accumulates and blocks the anus, preventing passage. Quickly have a woman rinse her mouth and suck the infant's anterior chest, posterior back, below the navel, and palms/soles of feet—seven areas in total—for four or five sessions. Dissolve half a qian of Calomel (Qingfen) with a little honey in warm water, and administer frequently until bowel movement is achieved.
If still obstructed, it indicates internal closure of the anus, requiring physical intervention. Use the tip of a gold/jade hairpin to locate the exact spot, pierce a hole, and insert a suppository made from *Suhe Xiang Wan* (Styrax Pill). Relief comes with fecal expulsion. If the abdomen is distended, the infant refuses milk and groans, survival is unlikely after seven days. (*Zhengzhi Zhunsheng*)
Jin Feng (Lockjaw Wind)
Newborns must be guarded against three diseases: Puckered Mouth (Cuo Kou), Lockjaw (Zhe Jin), and Umbilical Wind (Qi Feng). All are acute conditions, with Lockjaw being the most severe, lasting over a lunar month. Symptoms include: tight jaw, unstable feeding, diminishing cry, and foaming at the mouth. Quickly check the upper palate for spots. First, gently puncture with a fingernail. Then administer *Ming San* (Life-Determining Powder) or *Chensha Quanxie San* (Cinnabar and Whole Scorpion Powder). If the jaw remains locked and medication fails, use raw *Nanxing* (Arisaema Rhizome) peeled and powdered, mixed with a little Longnao (Borneol). Dip a finger in ginger juice and rub the gums; the mouth will open immediately. Although Qi Feng, Cuo Kou, and Jin Feng differ in presentation, their pathological principle is the same: internal qi stagnation and blockage. Generally, decoct fermented soybean juice for the infant to drink to expel fetal toxins. (*Shenghui Fang*)
Cuo Kou (Puckered Mouth)
External signs include a stiff tongue, cyan lips, yellow-red face, rapid breathing, inability to cry, and difficulty feeding. If white foam issues from the mouth and limbs are cold, it is incurable. If the abdomen is distended with visible veins, and the testicles are drawn up causing pain, these are all caused by gastrointestinal stagnation and blockage. Treatment prioritizes unblocking and draining; use *Chensha Gao* (Cinnabar Paste). The condition resolves after seven days. (Li Zhongnan)
Infant fetal qi carrying heat, also caused by maternal pathogenic heat transmission, or exposure to wind during bathing after birth, leads to inability to cry and difficulty feeding, named Cuo Kou. It is particularly severe within seven days; treat with *Jifeng San* (Urgent Wind Powder). (Zhang Huan)
Frequent puckering of the mouth in children indicates disharmony of qi. The lips correspond to the Spleen, and qi originates from the Lung. Spleen deficiency fails to generate Lung qi, causing frequent puckering. *Yigong San* (Beneficial Work Powder) tonifies the Spleen to generate Lung qi effectively. (Chen Feixia)
Newborns with Goose Mouth (E Kou), Cuo Kou, and Lockjaw are affected by external wind attacking the head and navel upon birth. Moxibustion with three cones and cauterization can cure it. (*Lunao Jing*)
Qi Feng (Umbilical Wind)
Qi Feng occurs when, after cutting the umbilical cord, water-dampness and wind-cold invade the navel, flowing into the Heart and Spleen. This causes abdominal distension, swollen navel, heavy body, limb stiffness, excessive crying, inability to suckle, and potentially convulsions. If the navel edge is cyan-black and the mouth is puckered shut, it is internal convulsion and is untreatable; black nails indicate death. If heat is in the chest, causing straining and extension, it also causes navel swelling. Treat primarily with *Longdan Tang* (Gentian Decoction). (Sun Simiao)
The root of this disease lies in fetal toxins. Generally, internal qi stagnation requires expelling fetal toxins promptly without delay. Ancient formulas such as *Tianma Wan* (Gastrodia Pill), *Ming Dan* (Life-Determining Elixir), and *Zhu Yin Wan* (Cinnabar-Silver Pill) can be given酌情; even critical cases often survive. However, Qi Feng and Cuo Kou appearing within seven days have a mortality rate of nearly 100%. (*Chishui Xuanzhu*)
This condition should first be treated with *Kongtan San* (Expel Phlegm Powder) to vomit wind-phlegm, then *Yipi San* (Benefit Spleen Powder) to harmonize the spleen, and finally *Chensha Gao* (Cinnabar Paste) to calm fright. Hand/foot curling and locked jaw are untreatable. (*Leicui*)
Within seven days of birth, if Qi Feng or Cuo Kou occurs, medications are rarely effective. A miraculous method: check the infant's gums for millet-sized blisters. Dip a cotton-wrapped finger in warm water and gently rub them open; this yields divine results without medicine. (*San Yin Fang*)
Ancient theories attribute Qi Feng solely to water-dampness and wind-cold. I believe this is incomplete. Qi Feng has internal and external causes, distinguishing between treatable and untreatable cases. External causes involve wind-damp injury; internal causes involve congenital deficiency of True Yang. Men with deficient Mingmen Yang inevitably produce infants with Qi Feng. External causes manifest between days 2-4, affecting the Six Fu organs, thus treatable. Internal causes manifest between days 6-7, affecting the Five Zang organs, thus untreatable. Key indicators include frequent sneezing, excessive crying, and loose sucking reflex. (Chen Feixia)
Chui Yong (Drooping Abscess)
Six to seven days after birth, if there is a substance on the tongue resembling a reed sheath holding water, it is called Chui Yong. Wrap a long needle in cotton, leaving only a millet-sized blade exposed, and prick to bleed. Observe for one day; if unresolved, prick again. Three pricks resolve it. Those under the tongue are called Chong She (Double Tongue); those on the hard palate are called Chong E (Double Palate); those on the gums are called Chong Yin (Double Gingiva). All require pricking to bleed. After pricking, rinse with salt water and apply *Rusheng San* (Like Sage Powder) or *Yizi San* (One Character Powder). (*Qianjin Fang*)
Tongue Manifestations
Briefly extending and retracting the tongue is called Nong She (Playing Tongue); extending slowly and retracting is called Tu She (Spitting Tongue). Nong She is caused by heat in the Spleen, tightening the tongue meridians, causing frequent extension; treat with *Xiehuang San* (Drain Yellow Powder). Drinking water excessively indicates Spleen-Stomach deficiency and scanty fluids. Combined with sallow complexion, emaciation, and five-palm heat, it is Guan Syndrome (Wasting-Thirst); treat with *Hulian Wan* (Picrorhiza Pill). Nong She appearing during a serious illness is ominous. (*Xiao'er Zhijue*)
Swollen, stiff, coarse tongue filling the mouth is called Mu She (Wood Tongue), caused by excess wind-heat. Untreated, it causes suffocation and death. Take *Xiehuang San* and *Yulu Yin* (Jade Dew Drink), and apply *Xiaohuang San* externally. A small tongue attached under the main tongue is Chong She (Double Tongue); apply Pulverized Polygonum (Puhuang) internally take *Danggui Lianqiao Tang* (Angelica and Forsythia Decoction). The tongue is the sprout of the Heart; Heart heat causes ulcers and rupture; Liver stagnation causes gushing blood; Spleen closure causes white coating like snow. Generally, prioritize dispersing heat from the Upper Jiao and the Heart, Liver, and Spleen meridians. (Chu Yushi)
E Kou (Goose Mouth)
Newborns with white debris covering the tongue, resembling a goose's mouth, get this name. It is caused by excessive grain qi in utero, with Heart-Spleen heat steaming into the mouth. Wipe with well water. Apply calcined Minium (Hongdan) to remove fire toxicity. If ineffective, boil walnut shell juice and wipe with cotton-wrapped fingers. ○ *Jianyao Fang*: Grind Nitrum (Yaxiao) finely and sprinkle on the tongue, 3-5 times daily. ○ *Milu*: Mix Mulberry bark juice with Calomel (Nifen) and apply. (*Zhengzhi Zhunsheng*)
Qi Shi, Qi Chuang, Qi Tu
Infant navel swelling and dampness, persisting untreated, becomes critical by 100 days. Treat urgently with equal parts Calcined Alum (Kufan) and Dragon Bone powder, add a little Musk, and wipe the navel dry. Avoid wind when applying medicine. (Hua Boren)
Apply ash from crimson silk to the navel. ○ Ash from dried toad and Oyster Shell (Muli), each one piece, burned and powdered for application. ○ Powder from rotten grass on old roofs, applied frequently, is effective. (*Zhengzhi Zhunsheng*)
Bathwater entering the navel, or urine wetting the swaddling clothes, causes navel swelling and ulceration. If bandages loosen, wind invades the meridians, causing Wind Epilepsy. Persistent navel swelling may lead to convulsions. (*Chaoshi Bingyuan*)
Qi Tu (Navel Protrusion): Caused by loose umbilical tying during bathing, allowing dirty water to infiltrate. After ten days, the navel suddenly protrudes smoothly like an inflated bladder. Treat with *Baishaoyao Tang* (White Peony Decoction) plus Coix Seed, and apply *Waixiao San* (External Resolution Powder) topically. It will flatten naturally. (Zeng Shi)
Tai Jing (Fetal Fright)
Symptoms: High fever within the first month, rolling eyes, clenched fists, lockjaw, teeth grinding, rigid torso. Saliva flooding, vomiting, convulsions, frightened crying, retracted cheeks, open fontanelle, red cheeks, or cyan face with closed eyes. Fetal wind causing closed eyes must not be mistaken for Slow Convulsion and treated with warming medicines. First, disperse wind-pathogens and clear fright/phlegm. (Wang Kentang)
Convulsions within 100 days: True cases die after 2-3 episodes; false cases recur but do not kill. True cases are internal Fright-Epilepsy; false cases are external Wind-Cold injury. (Qian Zhongyang)
For fright in the first month, mix Pig Milk with Cinnabar (Zhensha) and Realgar (Niuhuang), and wipe inside the mouth. Divine effect. (Tian Shi)
If pig milk is unavailable, cut open a live clam, take several spoons of water, and administer. Effective.
Tai Xian (Fetal Epilepsy)
Caused by fright to the abdomen before birth, excessive sour/salty intake by the mother, or emotional disturbance damaging fetal qi. Occurs within 100 days after birth. Symptoms: Rebellious qi, phlegm production, upward gaze, opisthotonos, inability to cry. First use *Rensu Yin* (Ginseng and Perilla Drink) to harmonize, then alternate *Bu Jing Dan* (No-Fright Elixir) or *Hupo Baolong Wan* (Amber Embracing Dragon Pill). Mild cases recover; severe cases may not fully heal. (Zeng Shi)
Tai Re (Fetal Heat)
Caused by the mother consuming too many heating foods during pregnancy. The infant is born with body heat, red face, hot breath, irritability, thirst, and constipation/dysuria. Decoct *Mutong San* (Akebia Powder) for the mother to drink, allowing medicinal properties to pass through breast milk. Do not seek quick results by using cold purgatives on the infant, which may cause vomiting and major complications. Be cautious. (*Shoushi Baoyuan*)
Tai Han (Fetal Cold)
Caused by the nursing mother catching cold during pregnancy, followed by external pathogen invasion after birth. Symptoms: Pale face, cold limbs, green-black stool, cold mouth, abdominal pain, shivering. Treat with *Danggui San* (Angelica Powder). (*Shoushi Baoyuan*)
Tai Fei (Fetal Obesity)
Born with thick, fleshy muscles and ruddy complexion. After one month, gradually becomes emaciated, with red sclera, five-palm heat, difficult defecation, and salivation. Treat with Bathing Method (Medicated Bath). (*Zhengzhi Zhunsheng*)
Tai Qie (Fetal Frailty)
Born with dull complexion, thin skin, pale stools, lack of ruddiness, gasping, frequent hiccups, and listless eyes. Also treat with Bathing Method. (*Zhengzhi Zhunsheng*)
Tai Huang (Fetal Jaundice)
Caused by maternal heat transmitting to the fetus. Infant born with full-body jaundice (golden color), high fever, constipation, urine like gardenia juice, poor appetite, and incessant crying. Treat primarily with * Dihuang Tang* (Rehmannia Decoction). (*Shoushi Baoyuan*)
Tai Chi (Fetal Redness)
Caused by the pregnant mother eating excessive spicy/hot foods, leading to toxic heat accumulation in the uterus. The infant is born with red skin on the head, face, and limbs, resembling cinnabar application. Treat primarily with *Qingre Jiedu Tang* (Clear Heat and Resolve Toxicity Decoction). For heat excess with constipation, use Jiangshi Huadu Dan (Jiang's Detoxification Elixir). (*Yizong Jinjian*)
Skinless
Two types of newborns born without skin: 1. Congenital Syphilis (Yangmei Jiedu) transmitted from parents, causing red rot on upper or lower body, sometimes turning purple-black. 2. Premature birth, causing whole-body immersion, red, tender, and shiny skin. Both are malignant prognoses. For Syphilis residue: Internally take *Huanji Xiaodu San* (Transform Skin and Eliminate Toxin Powder); externally apply *Qingliang Gao* (Cooling Paste) or *Ehuang San* (Goose Yellow Powder). For insufficient fetal origin: Internally take *Danggui Yin* (Angelica Drink); externally dust with Rice Flour. (*Yizong Jinjian*)
Newborns with skin resembling burns/scalds are caused by the mother's excessive consumption of rich/greasy foods. Mother takes *Qingwei San* (Clear Stomach Powder); infant drinks a few spoonfuls. Newborns with no skin but not red are due to maternal Spleen Qi deficiency; apply Rice Flour. Those who are red and febrile are due to maternal Stomach Fire excess; apply Gypsum Powder.
The *Classic* states: Spleen governs muscles, Lung governs skin/hair. Thus, the disease is in the Spleen and Lung. (*Zhengzhi Zhunsheng*)
Chi You Feng (Red Roaming Wind)
Caused by fetal toxic heat or excessive warmth after birth, causing toxic heat to evaporate outward. Skin becomes red, hot, and swollen, resembling cinnabar, wandering unpredictably across the body. Common on head/limbs; if it enters the Heart/Abdomen, death ensues. Treat with *Xijiao Jiedu Yin* (Rhino Horn Detoxification Drink); if ineffective, follow with *Lanye San* (Isatis Leaf Powder). External treatment uses Bian Fa (Bloodletting with stone needle) to drain toxic blood. Severe toxicity applies *Shengong San*; mild cases need no paste. Infants under 100 days contraindicate bloodletting due to fragile muscles. Use Pork Slice Method or paste of Adzuki Bean Powder and Egg White. Very effective. (*Yizong Jinjian*)
