Liver Fire Rushing to Lung Causing Cough: When Liver Meridian fire is hyperactive, it rushes upward to attack the Lung collaterals. This phenomenon, known as "Wood striking Metal ringing," results in coughing. The pulse at the left Guan position (position on the radial artery corresponding to the Liver and Gallbladder) is surging and rapid; treat with Rougan Xuanfei Tang (Softening Liver and Diffusing Lung Decoction). (Formula see later.)
Cold-Dampness Lingering in Middle Jiao: Cold-dampness lingers in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), preventing the clear Yang Qi from distributing. Symptoms include a hard and distended abdomen, sallow complexion, absence of thirst, anorexia, and a deep, slow pulse. Treat with Tongyang Tang (Unblocking Yang Decoction). (Formula see later.)
Wind-Heat in Liver Meridian and Damp-Water in Kidney Meridian: Wind-heat from the Liver Meridian and damp-water from the Kidney Meridian knot together between the muscles. Initially, blisters appear on the hands and feet, spreading to the wrists and shins. Early stages involve only tendon erosion, progressing later to bone detachment. It may recur after healing, often leading to death. Use Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii) and Ezhu (Rhizoma Curcumae), each 5 qian, ground into powder, divided into three doses, taken with warm water.
Root of Voice: The Kidney is the root of voice, and the Lung is the door of voice. In deficient individuals suffering from overexertion, Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is damaged. Qihai (Sea of Qi) becomes empty and floating, and Zhen Qi (True Qi) from the Dantian fails to connect with the Lung Qi above. Consequently, the throat becomes hoarse and difficult to produce sound. Internally administer Jinshui Bawu Tang (Metal and Water Eight Ingredients Decoction). (Formula see later.)
Food Stagnation Syndrome: Headache is not severe, fever is not high. There is fullness and oppression in the chest and abdomen, but heat is concentrated only in the upper abdomen. Careful palpation with the hand clarifies the diagnosis.
Ulceration and Fistula: Ulcers and carbuncles ulcerate and spread, becoming too large to heal easily. For lesions with thin skin, pass a medicinal thread through both ends of the wound, tie a slipknot, and tighten the thread daily. After seven days, the necrotic tissue will naturally separate, followed by topical application to promote healing. If the flesh is thick and the cavity deep, or if there are sequestra blocking the area, apply Bajiang Dan (White Reduction Powder) appropriately, followed by methods to generate new tissue.
Kidney Sac Abscess: Swelling and suppuration of the kidney sac (testicle), or damp-fluid accumulating in the sac causing bright swelling. If not punctured and drained promptly, it will rot and detach, becoming difficult to treat. First, use the left hand to push the testicle back inside. Then, using the right hand, hold a needle-knife and puncture at the lowest point of the swelling where fluid accumulates to drain pus and fluid. Accidental puncture of the testicle causes immediate danger.
Jaundice Disease: In all cases of Jaundice, the face and eyes are yellow, fingernails are white, the heart flutters (palpitations), there is dizziness, abdominal distension, fatigue, and the pulse is surging, rapid, and forceful. Decoctions are unnecessary; only pills are effective.
Ingredients: Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis), Dongzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Kushen (Cortex Phellodendri), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Zaofan (Melanteritum), Zhenxie (Needle Shavings).
Grind all herbs into powder. Cook black dates until soft, peel and remove pits, mash into a paste, and mix with the powder to form pills.
Tongue Coating Diagnosis: If the tongue coating floats on the surface appearing gray-black, while the underlying layer is slippery and moist, this is not due to Excess Fire injuring Yin, but rather Kidney Qi about to exhaust and dissipate outward. This condition is fatal and incurable. If the black tongue is caused by Excess Fire, it will be dry and prickly; administering cooling medicines will cause the black color to recede and the tongue to become moist again.
