A pulse that beats twice and then stops indicates death in four days. A pulse that beats three or four times and then stops indicates death in six days. A pulse that beats five times and then stops indicates death in eight days. If the pulse ceases to flow and return, death ensues.
If the pulse is deep, hidden, and cut off, death ensues. If the pulse is irregular, alternating between slow (Chi) and rapid (Shu), death ensues. If the pulse appears at the "Fan Guan" position (an anatomical variation where the radial pulse is located on the dorsal aspect of the wrist instead of the volar aspect), death occurs within half a year.
If the pulse is large, accompanied by fever, abdominal distension, closure of both urination and defecation, and mental confusion, it constitutes the "Five Excesses" (Wu Shi) syndrome, leading to death.
If the pulse is deficient, accompanied by aversion to cold, weak Qi, diarrhea and dysentery in both urination and defecation, and inability to ingest food, it constitutes the "Five Deficiencies" (Wu Xu) syndrome, leading to death.
The Si Tian (Chief Qi of the Year) changes annually. The Ke Qi (Guest Qi) overlays the Zai Quan (Opposite Earthly Branch Qi) and the Zhu Qi (Host Qi). Each segment of Zhu Qi governs 60 days and 87.5 ke (ancient time units). If the Guest Qi overcomes and drains the Host Qi, disaster strikes; if the Guest Qi generates and harmonizes with the Host Qi, fortune prevails.
Each Yun (Phase of Movement) governs 75 days and 5 ke.
Da Han (Great Cold), Li Chun (Start of Spring), Yu Shui (Rain Water), Jing Zhe (Awakening of Insects), Chun Fen (Spring Equinox), Qing Ming (Pure Brightness), Gu Yu (Grain Rain), Li Xia (Start of Summer), Xiao Man (Grain Buds), Mang Zhong (Grain in Ear), Xia Zhi (Summer Solstice), Xiao Shu (Minor Heat), Da Shu (Major Heat), Li Qiu (Start of Autumn), Chu Shu (Limit of Heat), Bai Lu (White Dew), Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox), Han Lu (Cold Dew), Shuang Jiang (Frost Descent), Li Dong (Start of Winter), Xiao Xue (Minor Snow), Da Xue (Major Snow), Dong Zhi (Winter Solstice), Xiao Han (Minor Cold).
Ancient sages were reluctant to disclose the complete diagram of Yun Qi (Luck and Qi) lightly, fearing that people might not believe it deeply enough. I, unassuming and humble, present it all openly for the benefit of my colleagues. If one can thoroughly study and ponder these diagrams, and upon reaching each month's solar term, carefully analyze them one by one, one can predict which diseases are most likely to occur. This is essential knowledge for those seeking the science of life and longevity. Do not neglect this.
Taking the Jia Zi year as an example: In years of Jia and Ji, the transformation Qi is Earth. The first Guest Qi is therefore Earth. Earth generates Metal, so the second Guest Qi is Metal. Metal generates Water, so the third Guest Qi is Water. Water generates Wood, so the fourth Guest Qi is Wood. Wood generates Fire, so the fifth Guest Qi is Fire. The rest follow this pattern.
When the Transformation Qi is Shao Yin Jun Huo (Lesser Yin Sovereign Fire), the predominant diseases include sores and ulcers, alternating chills and fever, fright and confusion, delirious speech, sorrow, and epistaxis.
When the Transformation Qi is Tai Yin Shi Tu (Greater Yin Damp Earth), the predominant diseases include obstruction and gridlock, abdominal fullness, cholera-like disorders, edema, accumulation masses, and fluid retention.
When the Transformation Qi is Shao Yang Xiang Huo (Lesser Yang Minister Fire), the predominant diseases include sores and ulcers, fright and restlessness, vomiting and sneezing, mental cloudiness, throat obstruction, tinnitus, sudden diarrhea, convulsions, and sudden death.
When the Transformation Qi is Yang Ming Zao Jin (Yang Ming Dry Metal), the predominant diseases include floating and deficient pulses, clear nasal discharge, pathology affecting the sacrum, thighs, knees, and feet, hypochondriac pain, and nasal congestion with sneezing.
When the Transformation Qi is Tai Yang Han Shui (Tai Yang Cold Water), the predominant diseases include stiffness and difficulty in joint movement, lower back pain, night sweats, neck rigidity, and seminal emission.
When the Transformation Qi is Jue Yin Feng Mu (Jue Yin Wind Wood), the predominant diseases include hypochondriac pain, vomiting and diarrhea, anal prolapse, tendon spasm, and tendon flaccidity.
