Indicated for infants suffering from sudden fright, crying, and apparent death (apparent death), or illness caused by evil qi intrusion when outsiders enter the home, which other physicians cannot treat:
Shuqi (Shu Root, *Dichroa Radix*) (1 fen, alternatively Shujiao, Sichuan Pepper Fruit, *Zanthoxyli Pericarpium*)
Zuogu Muli (Left-Gazing Oyster Shell, *Concha Ostreae*) (1 fen, calcined)
The above two herbs are chopped, boiled in one sheng of vinegar-infused water until reduced to five ge. Administer one ge per dose; this is effective.
Indicated for neonates suffering from epilepsy and fever due to Ke Wu (Guest Hostility) and Zhong E (Evil Strike), indigestion of breast milk, wind-stroke with opisthotonos (opisthotonus), protrusion of the tongue, Zhu Wu (Sticking Hostility), cyanosis of the face, upward deviation of the eyes, abdominal distension, emaciation due to epilepsy, Zhu disease (pestilential diseases), and failure to walk by age three. This is the Shuang Wan (Double Pill) Formula:
Shexiang (Musk, *Moschus*) (2 liang)
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, *Bovis Calculus*) (2 liang)
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, *Coptidis Rhizoma*) (2 liang, preferably from Xuanzhou)
Dansha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) (1 liang)
Teshengshi (Tesheng Stone, a mineral drug) (1 liang, calcined)
Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateralis Radix, *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*) (1 liang, processed, peeled)
Xionghuang (Realgar, *Realgar*) (1 liang)
Badou (Croton Seed, *Crotonis Fructus*) (60 seeds, peeled, heart removed, roasted)
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Bark, *Cinnamomi Ramulus Cortex*) (1 liang)
Wuzeiyugu (Cuttlefish Bone, *Sepiae Endoconcha*) (1 liang)
The above eleven herbs are each crushed and sifted separately. The Badou is ground into a paste separately, then mixed with the other herbs and refined honey, pounded for three thousand strokes. Seal tightly to prevent leakage of qi. Let stand for ten to twenty days, or up to one month. For infants aged forty days to one hundred days, administer two pills the size of millet grains daily. For infants over one year old, increase the dosage according to circumstances. If an infant is small but the condition is severe, increase the pill size; do not strictly adhere to these specifications. Infants suffering from Ke Wu often develop resistance to medicines; after administration, sweating should occur. If no sweat occurs, the disease will not resolve. Administer four to five times a day, considering sweating as the sign of recovery.
To diagnose if an infant has been affected by human-related evil qi: if the mother conceived again while still nursing, it can cause Ke Wu in the infant. "Blood held in the mouth" refers to Yue Ke (Monthly Guest). In such cases, seek and administer this medicine to save the infant. If the infant accumulates saliva and the abdomen feels hot, moxa-therapy should be applied to the umbilicus (Qihai/CV8 area implied by context of umbilical moxibustion, though text says Qi Zhong). Do not exceed fourteen moxa cones (zhuang), and continue administering this medicine diligently.
If the infant exhibits pica (craving for non-food items): immediately after birth, before the cry ceases, use a finger to scrape the tongue. Extract blood resembling a leek leaf. Administer two pills the size of millet grains. Continue for seven days, then stop. Recovery is assured. If Chitou Wugong (Red-headed Centipede, *Scolopendra Subspinipes mutilans*) is unavailable, Chizu Wugong (Red-footed Centipede, *Scolopendra Subspinipes mutilans*) may be used. Use three specimens, cutting off only the first two segments; the posterior parts are unusable.
