[Thirteen Formulas, One Discussion]
Indicated for heat syndromes caused by the ingestion of mineral and metallic substances (Jinshi), which are refractory to medical treatment; this formula brings about immediate recovery upon administration.
Ingredients: Puxiao (Mirabilite, 1 jin), Mangxiao (Thenardite, 1 jin), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 4 liang), Ningshuishi (Halloysitum, 2 liang).
Take the above four ingredients. Soak Puxiao and Mangxiao in five sheng of boiling water until dissolved. Allow to settle overnight. In the morning, collect the clarified liquid containing the salts. Place it in a copper vessel and coarsely crush the precipitate. Add Hanshuishi (Halloysitum) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) into the mixture. Then add five liang of Gold Leaf (Jin). Simmer over a gentle fire. Frequently test with the tip of a chopstick; when the substance adheres to the chopstick forming an ice-like crust, it is ready. Pour the mixture into a copper vessel and place this vessel within a basin of water. Allow it to cool and solidify overnight into an ice-like state. Let it stand for more than three days until completely dry. For heat diseases or toxicity from minerals/metals, mix with honey water and administer half the size of a chicken egg per dose.
Indicated for severe heat and heat syndromes triggered by minerals/metals that cannot be controlled by Jinshi Ling. Formula:
Puxiao (5 jin), Mangxiao (3 jin, preferably snow-white), Huashi (Talcum, 1.5 jin), Yuquanshi (a specific mineral stone, 1 jin), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 1 jin), Lujiang (a saline mineral, 5 jin, preferably in an ice-like form), Ningshuishi (Halloysitum, 1 jin, preferably snow-white).
Coarsely grind and sieve each of the above seven ingredients separately.
Dongling Water (Water from frozen ice, 5 sheng), Shuangshui (Frost water, 1 sheng), Xueshui (Snow water, 1 sheng), Lushui (Dew water, 5.5 sheng), Hanquan Shui (Cold spring water, 5 sheng), Yushui (Rain water, 1 sheng), Dongliu Shui (Flowing water from eastward direction, 5.5 sheng).
Clarify the above seven types of water until clear. Place the seven powdered ingredients into a copper vessel with these waters. Simmer over a gentle fire until reduced to seven sheng. Allow to settle overnight for clarification. Transfer to a porcelain jar and store in a clean place. Seal the mouth with thick silk cloth. After one hundred and twenty days, the substance will resemble frozen ice, forming crystals like white quartz with eight facets. The finished product may be as thick as a chopstick or up to one chi long. This is named "Qishui Ling" (Seven-Water Ice).
For those suffering from heat due to minerals/metals, mix with well water (Jinghua Shui) and administer using a measure of five fen bi. One dose will immediately quell extreme heat. For febrile disease due to Cold Damage (Shanghan), administer one dao gui. For pediatric fever, administer an amount the size of a hemp seed. Do not exceed this dosage. The efficacy is miraculous. When purchasing medicinal materials, do not haggle over price; ensure they are of superior quality. The preparation is best performed on the La Day (the last day of the twelfth lunar month). The preparation site must be pure and clean. Observe a seven-day fast beforehand. Do not enter homes with filth, mourning, bereavement, or postpartum women. Ensure that chickens, dogs, livestock, pregnant women, individuals with physical disabilities, and gossipy people do not witness the process. Do not administer to those who lack faith or reverence. After the fever subsides following medication, observe dietary restrictions for seven days, avoiding alcohol, meat, and the Five Pungent Spices (Wuxin). Refrain from harsh speech or punitive actions. Maintain mental purity through a seven-day period of abstinence and meditation.
