虚烦心闷方
[Formula of Purple Snow (Zixue)] Indications: Hong Kong foot (podagra/gout with toxic swelling) with toxin spreading throughout the body, internal and external irritability and heat, sores in the mouth, manic shouting and running about, as well as resolving toxicity caused by the eruption of various mineral drugs, herbal drugs, and hot-natured medicines; sudden onset of yellow jaundice and other miasma epidemic toxins. This is the best formula.
Gold (one jin), Hanshui Shi (Calcitum, 寒水石), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏), Cishi (Magnetitum, 磁石) [each three jin, crushed].
The above four ingredients are decocted in one shi of water to obtain four dou of liquid. The dregs are filtered out, and the subsequent herbs are added.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 升麻), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参), Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, 羚羊角) [shredded], Qingmuxiang (Pogostemonis Patchouli Herba, 青木香), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角) [shredded], Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 沉香) [each five liang], Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli, 丁香) [four liang], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) [eight liang, honey-fried].
The above eight ingredients are cut into pieces, placed in the previously prepared liquid, and decocted to obtain one dou of liquid. The dregs are filtered out. Nixiao (Natrii Nitras, 硝石) [four sheng] and refined Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 朴硝) [four sheng] are added to the liquid and boiled down to seven sheng. The mixture is poured into a wooden vessel. Zhusha Fen (Cinnabaris Pulvis, 朱砂粉) [three liang] and Shexiang Fen (Moschi Pulvis, 麝香粉) [half a liang] are added, and stirred until well mixed. It is left in a cold place for two days until it solidifies into a purple substance resembling frost or snow. Strong adults take a dose equivalent to three "bi" (a small spoonful). After administration, heat and toxins should be discharged through defecation. Dosage for the elderly and children should be adjusted according to their condition. One preparation can be stored and used for ten years.
[Formula of Black Frost (Xuanshuang)] Indications: Various types of heat, wind-heat, qi-heat, and miasma-heat; malignant sores and toxins attacking inward to affect the heart, causing heat and stifling sensation; eruptions triggered by taking various mineral drugs; epidemic diseases (Tianxing Shiqi, 天行时气); warm epidemic heat entering the fu-organs and zang-organs, transforming into jaundice; bites from snakes, tigers, foxes, or wild wolves containing venom; toxic vapors entering the abdomen and attacking the heart inwardly. Heat conditions requiring discharge of pathogens through purgation are treated by mixing one xiao liang of the powder with three to four he of water, stirring until dissolved, and administering orally. Within the time required to cook two meals, the patient should experience smooth defecation twice, after which recovery occurs. For pediatric heat diseases, a dose the size of a jujube seed is sufficient for recovery.
Gold (fifty liang), Hanshui Shi (Calcitum, 寒水石) [six jin, ground into powder], Cishi (Magnetitum, 磁石) [three jin, crushed], Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏) [five jin, crushed].
The above four ingredients are decocted in two hu of water to obtain six dou of liquid, which is then clarified.
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 升麻), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参) [each one jin], Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, 羚羊角) [eight liang], Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角) [four liang], Qingmuxiang (Pogostemonis Patchouli Herba, 青木香) [four liang], Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 沉香) [five liang].
The above six ingredients are cut and added to the aforementioned liquid, decocted to obtain two dou of liquid, and clarified.
Puxiao Mo (Natrii Sulfas Pulveratus, 朴硝末), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 芒硝) [each six sheng], Shexiang Dangmenzi (Moschus, 麝香当门子) [one liang, added later].
The above three ingredients are added to the liquid and soaked overnight. The clear supernatant is collected and slowly boiled over low fire in a copper vessel until reduced to one dou two sheng. It is tested with a spoon; when it solidifies, it is ready. After passing one night, it should congeal into a snow-like substance, appearing black in color. If it remains moist, it should be spread out and dried in the sun. The residue can be re-boiled with water until it congeals again, similar to the initial state. Finally, store it in a sealed container. This medicine is non-toxic. It also treats toxic wind and Hong Kong foot, heat-induced stifling sensation, red and swollen areas, and heat sores on the body. For external application, wet a small amount with water, apply with cotton wool to the affected area, and it will heal. Frequent administration of two doses treats heat in the upper diaphragm (taken after meals) and heat in the lower diaphragm (taken on an empty stomach). For sudden heat strangury with obstruction of urination and defecation, administer one liang. Patients with existing heat conditions are also suitable for this treatment.
Discussion: All formulas such as Frost and Snow are indicated specifically for cases where patients have previously taken major mineral drugs (Jinshi Dayao, 金石大药), resulting in fierce heat eruptions that cannot be controlled by ordinary herbal medicines. If the condition is not caused by minerals, it should be managed with decoctions or powders of herbal medicines. These Frost and Snow formulas must not be used indiscriminately. Improper use may cause excessive coldness, leading to subsequent pain in the waist and legs, thereby creating new ailments. Therefore, careful consideration is required.
