Indicated for abdominal zhijia (abdominal masses that are fixed and immovable), accumulation and fullness, alternating chills and fever, and guizhu (a contagious, chronic wasting disease with variable symptoms); long-standing cough with qi rebellion and hemoptysis. This formula expels evil spirits and pathogenic qi, treating guzhu (diseases caused by insect toxins). It addresses chest qi stagnation, the sensation of a foreign body in the throat, and retained food stagnation complicated by cold. The prescription is as follows:
Xionghuang (Realgar, 4 liang) Zhenzhu (Pearl, 2 liang) Dansha (Cinnabar, 2 liang) Lilu (Veratrum nigrum, 1.5 liang) Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, 1.5 liang, peeled and processed) Banmao (Mylabris, 20 pieces, roasted) Xingren (Apricot Seed, 80 pieces, tips and skins removed, double kernels discarded, roasted) Dichang (Euphorbia kansui root, 14 pieces) Fanshi (Alum, 1 liang, calcined) Chizu Wugong (Red-footed Centipede, 2 pieces, dried over fire) Badou (Croton Seed, 70 pieces, skin and heart removed) Guijiu (Podophyllum fruit, 3 liang) Tishengshi (Special Stone, 5 liang, calcined)
The above thirteen ingredients are ground into fine powder. Cut Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark) into particles the size of wheat grains; take fourteen pieces of Sangbaipi the size of a coin. Roast them in an iron vessel until they turn scorched black. Pound two thousand times. Add Dansha, Xionghuang, and other medicinal powders, and continue pounding four thousand times. Blend with white honey to form pills, sized like small beans.
If the progression or regression of the disease is unclear, but there is a sensation of qi moving up and down around the umbilicus, with pulsation upon palpation, mental restlessness, and a sensation akin to insects crawling, this indicates pathogenic qi wandering in the skin. Immediately apply one pill to the affected area and massage vigorously. If the subcutaneous tissue turns blue, it is effective; if it remains white or black, it is ineffective; if redness appears, the pathogen has penetrated deeply into the flesh and is difficult to cure.
For bites from bees or snakes on the right side, or affliction by malignant evil, ingest one pill; apply one pill directly to the wound. If the condition is uncertain, increase to three pills. For sudden onset of feishi (a acute syndrome characterized by severe abdominal pain), ingest three pills; apply one pill to the wound for immediate relief. For night terrors, fright upon waking from dreams, or malaise after visiting the sick or attending funerals, ingest one pill; or soak one pill in water and apply topically to repel evil qi and prevent pathogenic invasion.
For sudden possession by demons causing delirious speech, apply one pill to the pulse point and another to the Ren-26 (Renzhong) acupoint for recovery. To ward off chasing spirits, apply one pill to doors and gates so that spirits dare not approach. For gu poison diseases, fast overnight, then ingest one pill the next morning; if ineffective, increase to two or three pills, stopping when efficacy is achieved. For resolving accumulated masses, fast before ingesting four pills; to merely dissipate the mass, ingest one pill three times daily. After administration, expect the discharge of substances resembling egg whites, or snakes and insects. Following evacuation, replenish the body with a broth made from lean fatty meat.
To counteract fox noises or phenomena, throw one pill towards the source; the fox will die at that location. This formula is mysterious and not transmitted lightly.
