In the first month on the first day, before sunrise during the Yin hour; in the third month on the third day during the Yin hour; in the fifth month on the fifth day during the Wu hour; in the seventh month on the seventh day during the Chou hour; in the ninth month on the ninth day during the Yin hour (another version says Chou hour). Accepting the spell-restraining method in the first month is used for the whole year; accepting it in the third month is used for spring; accepting it in the fifth month is used for summer; accepting it in the seventh month is used for autumn; accepting it in the ninth month is used for winter.
Every year, follow this method of acceptance on these days. During this period, one must not drink alcohol, eat meat, consume the Five Pungent Spices (Garlic, Chinese Leek, Onion, Chinese Chive, and Asafoetida), Rapeseed, dairy products like yogurt and cheese, butter, or honey. One must hold the intention of Yao Wang (Medicine King) and Yao Shang Bodhisattva vowing to save all sentient beings, without feeling hardship, and without seeking wealth. Simply by holding this intention when taking medicine orally, the illness will heal immediately, with no failure.
The ritual for accepting the spell-restraining method uses the aforementioned months and days. First, bathe with clean well water drawn at dawn. Upper and lower garments must be fresh and clean. Observe a vegetarian fast for seven days. On that day, first bathe and rinse the mouth with well water drawn at dawn. Burn incense and bow five times to the Five Emperors of the Five Directions. Face east, burn incense, stand upright, place a clean vessel containing well water drawn at dawn beside you. Recite the received spell-restraining texts fourteen times each. Hold water in the mouth, tilt the head to receive from the five directions, wash hands and face. Then, facing east, inhale green Qi into the mouth seven times imagining it entering. Next, facing south, inhale red Qi; then facing west, inhale white Qi; then facing north, inhale black Qi; finally, inhale yellow Qi from the center. Imagine all inhaled Qi entering the abdomen seven times. Bow five times to each of the five directions again. Afterwards, cultivate the mindset of observing a two-month vegetarian fast and mastering the spell-restraining method, avoiding all evil deeds. Upon completion, the spell-restraining method is established. Vessels must not have previously held alcohol, meat, or the Five Pungent Spices.
Method for accepting spell-restraint for swelling:
Where there is Mugwort (Artemisia argyi) growing under the shade of a mulberry tree north of an ancient tomb, on the fifth day of the fifth month at dawn before sunrise, walk fifty-four steps south from the north of the tomb. Arriving at the Mugwort, perform the Yu Bu (Great Yu's Step) forming the Big Dipper constellation pattern, then return. Hold breath, take Mugwort leaves, wipe hands so the juice enters them. Do not wash hands for seven days. Maintain a vegetarian fast beyond seven days, and the spell-restraint is complete.
Mark the fifty-four steps clearly, seven chi per step. When climbing to take the Mugwort, face west and recite a mantra: "May my hands cure all carbuncles and swellings, all poisons, and indeed all illnesses; touching the afflicted area brings immediate healing." After completing the method, return without looking back. To accept, observe a fast on the fourth day of the fifth month, mark the steps, and have a recorder note them. Place the position of Kui (one of the Twenty-Eight Mansions) east of the Mugwort, with the tail pointing north, marking fifty-four steps northward. On the morning of the fifth day, walk south from north, complete the method, and observe the fast. On the eleventh day, climb the mulberry tree. The Mugwort growing three chi above ground north of the tomb is best. One may also stay east of the tomb on the fourth day. On the morning of the fifth day, perform the Yu Bu method, hold breath, and clench fists. If treating illness, imagine the hand as hot iron; imagine the patient's illness as snow melting upon contact with the hand. Additionally, when treating, operate where the patient's vital Qi is strong. If there is facial edema, do not treat it all at once to avoid harming the patient; leave some to treat the next day. In the sixth year of Daye in the Northern Zhou dynasty, Liang Kuo, Magistrate of Gong County, Langya Commandery, sent a method practiced by Master Ling from Shanji Daochang on Mount Shanchi, which was miraculous but not transmitted.
Method for accepting spell-restraint for Malaria:
Wait until swallows first arrive. Take a sheet of paper, dot it thickly with ink. Look at the swallow until the dot disappears, then stop. Later, if a Malaria patient comes, say to the clouds, "I suffer from Malaria," and tell them, "I will treat you." You only need to go to a yin/shady place, take a dot of ink, plug it into a hole in the wall, and it will heal.
Another method: On the first day of the first month, while calling cattle and horses, hold a pen under fire, hold breath, and write many "Ghost" characters on paper until breath runs out. When Malaria is about to attack, press a "Ghost" character and swallow it, and it will heal.
Comprehensive spell-restraint method for swelling:
On the first day of the first month when the east begins to lighten, take a clean mat to a quiet, uninhabited place. Bathe and rinse the mouth three times with well water drawn at dawn. Hold incense sticks and bow to the Five Heavenly Emperors of the Five Directions. Recite the vow: "Disciple [Name] accepts the Heavenly God's spell today, wishing to save all sentient beings from suffering." Bow three times to each of the four directions. Imagine inhaling green Qi from the east into the mouth and swallowing seven times; red Qi from the south; white Qi from the west; black Qi from the north; yellow Qi from the center, each swallowed seven times. Facing south and east, hold breath and recite the spell seven times each. Observe a vegetarian fast for seven days. Recite the spell: "What Heaven makes round, Earth makes square. Accepting the Heavenly God's talisman allows for longevity. The Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions are bright in color. Changes in five colors combine with the talisman. Hurry, according to the law!" Next, recite: "Flesh born without roots stops not. Great swelling like a mountain, small swelling like millet. Climbing high mountains, approaching the sea. Born at dawn, dying at dusk. Hurry, according to the law!"
Use a knife with a Rosewood handle. Press the swollen area with the knife handle. If the swelling is painful, use the previous spell text; if not painful, use this spell text. Both spells are orthodox texts for restraining swelling. All malignant swellings use these two texts. For large swellings, apply the spell four or five times daily; it heals in five days. For small ones, it heals on the same day.
General Spell-Restraint Method:
Recite: "The morning sun is unfavorable, injured by creatures. I report upwards to the Lord of Heaven, downwards to the Emperor of Earth. Lady of the Emperor of Earth, teach me to restrain sores. Immortals hold water, Jade Girls hold paste. One spit stops poison, two spits stop sores, after three spits, return to normal. Thunder of Heaven, neighing of horses, sores are not startled. Earthquakes of Heaven and Earth, sores are not afraid. Skin connects, flesh matches. No pain, no swelling, no pus. Hurry, according to the law!" Use a knife. First, suck a mouthful of water, mix salt in the mouth, and spit onto the disease. If a child has fright, drag them over the ground two or three times, spit quickly onto the disease, bring the mouth close to the disease site, and recite the spell. Spit three times per recitation. Every seven recitations, rinse the mouth with salt water. Twenty-one recitations constitute one complete spell-restraint. If not healed, increase the number of recitations until healed. If not healed after one hundred recitations, the disease is too severe and incurable; do not treat it.
Spell-restraint method for Seasonal Pathogenic Factors:
For headache, hide the knife against the painful spot, spit and recite the spell as described earlier. For any painful area, use the back of the knife to conceal and restrain it. If suffering from metal wounds from falling, injuries from livestock, wild wolves, tigers, snakes, or venomous beasts, or sudden spasms of hands and feet. For all kinds of pain and discomfort, use this method of spell-restraint, and all will be cured. It cannot be fully recorded. Both men and women can accept and maintain it.
Commentary: These miscellaneous methods exist because the spell-master cannot possess the perfect Great Method. Therefore, lighter, simpler methods are accepted. If the Great Method were accepted, these would not be necessary.
